I remember when high end dual suspension mountain bikes were first becoming popular and Specialized started to sue everyone for patent infringement. The small manufacturers couldn't go to court, so they gave their patents to Specialized...

A WMW rack for my truck would have been preferred but since a 5th gen version isn't out, I too had planned to go with Gobi. I will call them tomorrow and let them know they've lost my business over this.

Best of luck to you Josh, a gentleman named Michael Tomey bought a rack from you and I got to look at it up close. You did us all a service by offering a nice roof rack with a good price, so we didn't have to buy racks that were way too overpriced.
I'll never buy from Gobi, their racks are the definition of overpriced. They never did shit for us but give MillerPKA racks so he could show them off for them (no offense Weston). Yeah right, like I'd ever pay near what they want.

Really eye opening to see a company that has to screw the little guy to get business done. I think that says a lot about the people running it. If you can't succeed by making a great product and providing good customer service (Like Josh does, by the way), don't take it out on someone else.
Also, who patents a roof rack?

I was about to bring up the round corner lawsuit! looks like I was beat to it.
Also, if I were in a frivolous lawsuit like this. I'd put my designs into the public domain that way everybody can make them for themselves... Just saying.
This is sad to see I wanted a Whitson rack so bad, I was going to order one this fall. Although if Josh gets into Bumpers, sign me up!!!! Its sure to be awesome!
Make a rear bumper for the 4th gen that looks as good as your roof racks!!!!!

i was one of the folks who was ~2 weeks away from recieving my rack form WMW's- its sad to see this happen and i hope josh and his biz bounce back in a big way and i believe it will...i'm gonna keep my fingers crossed and wait until next spring to see how things play out- i have 2 big camping trips this fall planned and was excited to use my roofrack but i'm gonna wait to try and support josh- its the least i can do

The broader the patent the easier to defend. Hopefully Josh has resources to defend this.
Gobi suing first shows what type of clowns they are. It's not about stopping the patent issue, its trying to shut him down.

What happened to the good ol' days of leveraging economies of scale to price racks so low that potential competitors can't overcome barriers to entry for the given price point? :-D
Gobi makes a good-looking rack but even if they weren't so overpriced I will never buy one after this. I can't stand abuse of the legal system (we don't know all of the details certainly, though it looks that way to me). Wish they had an Amazon store or somewhere I could leave some feedback.

As already stated, it's hard not to see the similarities between the racks. I can see why Gobi is upset. Josh has arguably been making a better product for half the price. What a crappy situation. We're all pulling for you Josh!
