So I need some opinions here. I have the Rola roof basket setup with extension installed on the truck now. Since the time I installed it I became more into kayaking and carry a few kayaks up there. This unfortunately has presented a problem since the Rola rack is bending down with lack of support over the sunroof since the roof rails end behind the sunroof. Im afraid one bad bump and the rack could smash my sunroof. So I have some options here....
Option 1 was thinking about going with a roof platform instead of a basket. Whitson Metal works can make that same setup for me without the basket sides (he has done a few for rooftop tent guys) and without the mesh floor. It would give me the full length rack look I like and function.
Option 2 is going with a basic Thule foot pack and load bar setup. I would need the Podium fit kit $76, the Podium Foot kit $ 170, and the load bars $41 ea. All told is about $329. I tried CL for some parts but not much to be found besides the load bars and I sort of feel uncomfortable about reusing someones old parts to hold my boats on the roof of my truck god forbid it fails. These thule bars attach to small feet that I feel are no as secure.
Option 3 is find a way to strengthen the basket. Something needs to support the end over the sunroof... Or remove the extension piece all together.
There is a few other companies out there that build platform racks. Most would be in the $500 including shipping. Let me know what you think.
