Roof Rack Recommendations

I'm looking for some recommendations on full length roof racks. I'd like something that can handle a bit of weight - nothing crazy, just things like an extension ladder, pieces of lumber/pipe, maybe the odd piece of furniture, etc.

This would mainly be a replacement for a truck bed for weekend chores, with the added bonus of covering up the dent in my roof that the PO did and I didn't notice until now.

I've seen the Gobi in person and they're nice. I like their mounting setup as I will not be adding any new holes to this truck. I don't like the Gobi logo on the support legs though, but I can live with that. I've heard the Gobis don't create a lot of wind noise, which is pretty important to me as this rack would only be used a handful of times annually and I do not want to decrease the daily comfort of the truck.

I have no expectations of loading up a bunch of fuel, coolers, Hi-Lift, Maxtrax, etc. and doing an expedition through The Rockies. I will not be adding any kind of light houses, transmission towers, storage sheds or hot tubs to the roof rack of my 4Runner. :peep:


Anyway - do y'all have any recommendations? :tea:

Everyone always says "Do a search". I hate the search function on this forum. I want to search this forum only and the search feature on this forum takes you to the web. I want the advice from guys here, not jeep owners.

Why this forum is set up like this is beyond me, and why members respond with worthless "do a search" is also beyond me. Everyone here has similar interests in our 4Runners, people asking questions from fellow members is what forums are all about.

I am interested in the OP's questions as well, but god forbid I ask a question around here.

You are going to the wrong search bar. Go to the top, click search, then advanced search. Bam. Everything you need.

The Gobi's are awesome. However, part of what makes them so great is all the great stuff you can add on to it. Sounds like what you want is a "utility trailer" for your roof. No frills and no intent to go sticking things to it. Exactly like my buddy. He went with the Baja Flat Rack. It looks great on his '16 SR5, easy install, and perfect for just haulin' stuff.

Anyone ever varnish up some 3/4" plywood and use some ubolts to attach it to the existing crossbars?

This wouldn't be for highway driving; purely off-road for hauling some gear and equipment around at low speed. Hooks could easily be put anywhere you want to strap down gear.

But also OP. You can't go wrong with GOBI, Baja, or Front runners (haven't seen one in person but people rave about them). I personally have a baja utility flat rack with the mesh floor. I love it, it allows me to carry pretty much anything I need to up there with a few ratchet straps and other assorted mounting/securing devices.

How is the wind noise?

I can't tell from their website how the front feet mount. Do they just rest on the roof like the Gobi?

because it clogs the forum up with the same stupid, redundant questions....so instead of the search results yielding 2 pages of readable useful information...you get 14 pages of the stuff like above....."whats the difference between a graape?"...is it colder in winter or Pennsylvania?"....

You're absolutely right. Every modification, issue, etc. had been addressed at least once on this forum. I move that the entire site is locked and archived as read only.

Just so we are on the same page, the Gobi (or any other rack), will increase wind noise and will decrease MPG.....by how much depends on conditions and if it will be acceptable to you is totally up to you. If you like the look of a roof rack I say go for it, if you are truly doing this to add utility.....don't. Buy a utility trailer or just rent a Home Depot truck or borrow from a friend.

I don't care what anyone posts as I don't have to answer but he is right, having 100's of threads on the same topics make the search function less effective........unrelated but what does drive me bonkers is folks who spend 15min in line , get to the counter and have no idea what they want

Using roof rack options as our search criteria, there are two easy ways to handle this:

1. Use that search bar up top, but type in "5th gen roof rack options".

2. Go to Google.com and type "5th gen 4runner roof rack options".

I do get what you're saying about how annoying it is to hear "do a search" when you post questions that have been asked a million times. It probably is frustrating for you. In turn, I wish there was an auto-mod that would either just immediately delete threads that are constantly reoccurring, and/or run a small script to search google using the nouns in the thread title and one of the search syntax above to aid in the difficulty behind using search engines.

I'm a part-time off roader. Use it a couple times a year to get into some places where only ATVs and off-road vehicles dare tread...it's not too challenging; steep inclines with loose rocks, mud, washed out roads (old logging roads, high voltage power line access trails and old mineral exploration trails) but the 4x4 and clearance definetly keep out "the rest".

I'm looking at a potential opportunity where I'd be going back and forth on these trails every 2 weeks or so for supplies over the course of 6 months or so.

I already have a hitch mounted cargo carrier in the rear and roof top cargo box. This has suited me fine in the past but with the extended stay there's a pretty good chance I'll need to haul in something more bulky that won't quite fit inside. Plus, the more cargo I can carry, the fewer trips I'll need to make.

If I got a trailer, it would have to be a pretty good one. I'm considering adding a hitch receiver in the front for a 2nd cargo basket and also thinking about something inexpensive and temporary for the roof. The supply run is at low speeds with only a short drive at the end on public roads so it doesn't need to be purty.

so you you want to make an asinine comment, that's up to you....but your question, that could very have easily been researched, and then you could make a half intelligent question like "I read this about the Gobi, or I read this about an ARB, or I read this about Prinzu...what do you guys think?"....you instead decide to ask something that has least been asked 20 times a year over the last 7 years.

Don't get butthurt....just don't take the lazy approach and expect everyone to do your homework for you. Everyone has an opinion on their rack...put more then 30 seconds into the question and educate yourself a little.

Because someone will answer them. That and the world is full of snowflakes who think whatever is happening in their life is the most unique thing in the world that has never happened in the history of the cosmos. And people be lazy.
