Roof Rack That Mounts to Factory Rails

Searched but could not find much information on what if any aftermarket roof racks that are out there that mount to the factory roof rails.

Looking for a economical rack that does NOT need the crossbars or removal of the factory rails.

Has anyone had any luck?

Check out this rack that [MENTION=143001]Adventure-Yeti[/MENTION] has installed. I have the RockyMount Bike racks and they are high quality racks, especially for the price.

before biting the bullet and going with a full length rack the rockymounts 14'er was the direciton i was heading:
- 53"x43" measurements aesthetically a good fit for factory 4R rails (iirc when i measured the rails are almost exactly 43" apart and if you line the basket up where it's just in front of the shark fin then the leading edge of the fairing should line up with the front factory end caps)
- only 4" high (compared to the yakima baskets which are 6.5")
- comes with a cargo net (not sure how useful, or adjustable it is)
- retails $269 (yakima loadwarrior @ $299, megawarrior @ $399) and is currently on prime for $246 apparently

i have no hands-on experience with this rack, but on paper it was looking good.

The reason for not wanting a rack that requires cross bars is not only cost savings but mainly because using the cross bars raisea the height of the roof rack compared to one that mounts to the rails directly.

Basically 1 less layer.

Looking at this... Could you just do the exact same thing by adding a bunch of cross rails? I think with 8 cross rails you can do just about anything...

At ~$100 for a set of 2... you could theoretically add 4 sets of OEM crossbars to your OEM rails and have a good base for carrying stuff off the roof.

Yeah... seems like every week there is someone new on the 5th Gen Buy/Sell thread that is selling cross rails for cheap. Most people are going to full length baskets like Gobi, Prinsu, or Baja.

I understand the OP's want for a good basket close to the roof, but they are just as expensive as a full length basket without the roof rails.

You could, but 2 railes cost about 135 so about 550 total on that.

Edit: just saw other's posts on this for cheaper and maybe only 4.

I've had a Rocky Mounts rack on my Range Rover for 2 years, it still looks good as new. My Range has traversed thousands of miles off-road- and that rack has held everything from my RotoPax, Shovel, Hi-Lift Jack, Sleeping Bags, Folding Chairs and my Pelican Case. It has been fantastic, strong and hasn't shown signs of wear or fatigue. For under $400- I don't think you can beat it.

I purchase a 2nd Rocky Mounts basket for my 4runner, because it fits perfectly on the cross-bars and doesn't extend past the OEM side rails or Sharkfin antenna. The rack itself includes a fairing, all the hardware to universal mount on square, round or aero bars, and a cargo-net which is really good quality. I would say, you can't go wrong with this basket if your looking for a strong, affordable unit that won't require any fabrication, drilling or modification to your rigs roof.

Would I sleep or Stand on it? No- But it does what I need it to do, hold my ARB awning and haul my gear for extra space within my cabin. :reddance:

This looks like a good economical option but does not appear to be able to mount to the rails and requires cross bars.

I think if you really wanted to save some money...I believe (don't take this to the bank) that Uni-strut and some of their fittings will work in in the slots of the roof racks.

This was the path I was thinking about temporarily until I got my rack started...but I just went ahead and started the full length.
