Why isn't there just a simple roof rack system, similar to the FJCruiser or Xterra for our 4R? Maybe not for a Limited, but for the TE a tube system going all the way to the front with 3-4 cross bars would be more than enough. It should also cost much less than a Gobi or Baja rack system.

If there was a big enough demand for this type of rack there would be someone manufacturing it. Big demand = lots of choices + low cost and small demand = few choices + big cost.

I think it has to do with aesthetics as well as demand.
I have the FJ rack on my FJ and it is a monster, great if you need it.
I've owned two(2) Fj's since '07 and used the rack half a dozen times in 6 years. When you need it, it's nice to have.
Not sure it would look great on a 4runner (like you said maybe an option on the TE but, how many TE's are there? Not many)

Yea, I have sketched out a few options too. I sorta am torn right now though as I have been looking at the Tundra Crewmax and don't know if I will continue down the 4Runner path or change back to a truck. We shall see!
If I didn't drive 100-120 miles a day - I'd get a Tundra. Nice truck.
Can I be a tester for your design?

Here's a pic of the design, based on sliding "in between" the TE roof rails..and supported by two brackets in the front, which need to be designed at this point.
I figured 1-1/2" by 1-1/2" square tube....probably 18#
holds a full size spare..Maxtrax.....2- Rotopax.....5' Hi Lift....ans a shovel. I also figured 2-10" SR LED's
