There are lots of great, free camping spots off Medano Pass Road in Great Sand Dunes. That's a fun trail to drive too.

I read they fill up quickly, especially during May. are they first come sites?

Yes, first come. I'm sure they fill up quickly on the weekends. I went last Labor Day weekend. It was pretty busy, but I found a good one a couple miles down the road.

my RTT has arrived!
it showed up yesterday and I have it all unpacked and putting it together. I ordered the CVT Shasta pioneer series. couple quick questions for those who can maybe assist.
the weather this weekend is looking clear and nice for Colorado. might have to do an initiation this weekend.

- the track for the railing on the bottom. is it really only held on by those 2 10mm bolts and then the self tapping screws on the end? in the bag there was 4 washers but instructions did not say to use them. seems like nut could pull right through that oval shaped hole (I ran them the long way)
- is there a trick to closing it and getting the cover on. right now I only have it on my garage floor, when trying to close it up the tent pokes out the side and the cover is super snug. i felt like i would rip the cover and even after really pulling on it i couldn't get it on. i tried tucking the tent overflow back in but i cant even get it re-buckled like it was when i took it out of the box.
- chances are ill be loading it solo most times. what setup do you guys/gals use for loading on your roof. i will already have my crossbars mounted to the bottom of the tent. i was thinking of getting some 2*6's or something wider and sliding it up those over the tailgate.
- the annex was inside the tent when it arrived, but i read i cant store it in here when traveling is that true?

built a little dolly to move my tent around in the garage a little easier.
pretty simple easy setup.
i have the mt shasta pioneer series, the ladder it came with was a bit too short. ordered the upgraded telescoping ladder that comes on the summit series. i like it much better than the pioneer one, the footing, its wider and the locking mechanism are much better.
i also added the shoe bags that usually come with the summit series

The more I look, the more I imagine, and the more I want a RTT. My backpacking tent just doesn't suffice after looking at this thread.

its a pretty cheap setup. I used 4 8' long 2*4's and 4 caster wheels. I had wood screws laying around already. the wheels were $3 each and the boards were $2.50 each.
cut 4 55" long pieces. 2 for the base 2 for the back.
used 2 of the remaining 41" boards cut in half for the 4 cross pieces on the bottom.
used 2 of the remaining 41" boards for the height of the back.
I think I may carpet or something the bottom to protect it a little better
i just bought a furniture dolly from harbor freight. works well for me

I have spent a considerable amount of time in my current roof top tent. Since January I estimate we've spent around 60 days sleeping in this tent. The tent is made by Denver Outfitters and I find this mattress much more comfortable than any other roof top tent ive owned. The downside to this tent is the nylon straps are beginning to fray from the constant opening/cinching after every night sleep. We just finished a 10 day cross America expedition and the tent did me well for the 4000 mile trip. One of the clips that hold the window up broke, but that is no big deal, especially based on how much I use the tent. Overall I give it a 8 out of 10.

More pics.. to add this tent stays so dark with the sun coming up. I cannot stand being hit by this huge ass sun blaring into my tent Tents been in 17 states and counting!!!

Tepui Ayer RTT on 3rd gen 4runner
We have a Tepui Ayer RTT on our 98' 4runner that has been through about every kind of condition you can imagine except for snow over the last year and a half. Couldn't be happier with it. RTT camping is a game changer and anyone contemplating doing it, I would highly recommend. It's well worth it. We can set this up in less than 5 minutes, quicker than a ground tent.

So what is everyone's view of the benefits of a RTT as opposed to a traditional tent?

For me, it's not having to pack up my sleeping bags, mats, and pillows, and being off of the ground. It just feels a lot more like a room than a tent, for some reason. Hard to explain.
I would say that in the years before our roof top tent my wife and I probably camped a total of 2-3 times a year. We had a decent Kelty tent (but would still get soaked if it rained) but neither of us EVER slept well while camping, which made it miserable.
I've had the roof top tent in POURING rain, snow, hail, and crazy winds. The only time I didn't sleep like a baby was when the wind was whipping the rain fly so hard on the first night we had it, that I thought the tent was coming off of the rack. We've already camping a half dozen times this year, and many more trips planned now that the sun is finally coming out here in the PNW.
We used to stay in hotels on road trips instead of camping... Haven't done that once since we got the tent. Paid for itself in about 5 nights =p

I purposefully left this out of my post because I find it a bit misleading. It's faster, for sure. However,
While it is quite quick to get it set up, it is kinda a pain on a lifted vehicle, especially if you're not a taller person. On my 3rd gen 4Runner with a VERY low profile rack it was quick and easy.
However, on my GX with a Front Runner rack, it's pretty annoying to set up. It's just so far off of the ground that it's tough to reach everything, even at 6' 2" or so, and standing on the tires/sliders.
