roof top tents...?

Yakima or Thule cross bars will hold a RTT up just fine, while reducing the additional weight in the worst place (on the roof).

I have been very happy with my RTT and have slept in it for a total of about 40-45 nights. I got it from TRDParts4U:

I have also been impressed with the construction of Eazi Awn tents. They were not in my price range when I was considering the purchase, but if I was living out of it for weeks, as some of my friends do... I would consider the higher price to be fair given the higher quality materials used for construction and more precise construction.

RTT on 1st Gen

I have looked everywhere and can't have this answered... can I put a RTT on my 88 4runner's hard top? It is only fiberglass and I am scared to do it. Does anyone know the static load limit of a 1st gen's hard top? I think its dynamic load is 150 lbs. I have also been looking for a wrap around roof rack kit like the jeeps have, do they make one for 4runners? Any help would be awesome.

I have seen two or three 1st gens with them on the roof. I will try to see if I can dig some pictures or links up. I would really look on expedition portal or do a google search to find out.
 
I was visiting Bend OR, and ran into and met the owner of CVT's. they seem pretty cool.
was going to try and be a dealer, but I have no money to buy one or two at this time.

at least there close to you being in Vancover.

I pla n on doing a trailer thing too, on longer trips. but I just plan on ground tenting or sleeping in the rig till I can afford one.

I guess this kinda applies.....My dad has one of these (Toyota Chinook) 1976 I think.
Basically an old toyota truck chassis with a camper on top. gas stove, 2 beds, plenty of storage, table, hot water, this things awesome! The roof pops up like another 2 feet. My dad is slowly restoring his. Kinda goofy but its so badass.

yeah i found them last week some how when i was bored on the internet. i think next time im down that way im gonna stop in and check them out
 
Good info on here.... but I like the idea of folding down the seats and sleeping in the runner...or a normal tent. Ill save the moolah for some armor

hope your a short guy, cause im 6'1" and there is no way i will be sleeing comfortably in the back of my runner without pulling the seats first.
 
I had one for awhile on my previous Tacoma. Was super happy with it, very comfortable and setup time was next to nothing... However the biggest drawback in my eyes was having to tear it down every time you want to move and also trying to be cautious of not hanging it on large treebranches on the trail. Ours was a Mombassa Overland Plus model and we had the bottom changing room as well. I chose this model because the changing room was completely enclosed with 4 walls and a floor. That's where the little man and dog slept when we were all together.

Then we decided that comfort when family camping was more important and a nice "base camp" would be sweet so we made the change.... :D

I got the Autohome tent just before i left Wa. I took it on a 4 day trip, then slept in it on my drive to Alabama. There is no comparison, it is by far the most comfortable i have ever been while camping. It has more than enough room for me to stretch out in, i am 6'1". My fiance and i fit in there with plenty of room. There is enough room in it for me to change clothes inside with out being a contortionist.
The tent i got weighs in around 130 or so. I really don't notice it up there on or off road. The main reason i went with this tent is the hard shell. It is more aerodynamic than the fabric tents. I lost a mile or two off of my MPG.
The only down side i have found is the price. They are expensive, but i went camping with one guy who has been using his for over 10 years, and another guy who bought his used and it was around 5 years old. so they definitely last

my buddy has one he puts behind his off road vw bus that carries a genny,extra fuel and a bunch of other things that might eve be needed, he's pretty much fully self sustained. i think he's running 32's
