rooftop cross members?

I'd like to get some cross members for the rails I have and wonder what is the best, simple solution?

I don't have a dedicated need, I just want them for general use purposes.

Should I just look for some oem take offs or go after market?

If you are carrying something wide and long, then you may want to use something like Yakima's Railgrab and cross bars. When I tried to mount a paddle board on the OEM cross bars, the sharkfin antenna got in the way. Using an aftermarket setup with elevated bars will also give you more room between the roof and bars for securing some of the accessory mounts.

I like Thule crossbars. They are strong, have locks and can be easily removed if needed. I have them for over 5 years, but remove them in the winter to simplify cleaning snow form the roof.

I believe OEM crossrails are only around $100 new

Oem crossbars have a 150 pound weight limit if in not mistaken. If you get the Thule or Yakima cross bars the load limit is much higher.

OEM crossbars require popping off the plastic end caps and sliding them in to the channel on the factory rails. Your width is then of course limited to the width of the factory bar/rail system. If you're hoping to haul multiple toys (2 kayaks, box and bikes, etc.) you may not have enough real estate. The slight curve of the factory bars is also somewhat odd to work with IMHO.

Rack systems from Thule and Yakima (for example) require two primary parts for the base system. One part clamps on to the rails and allows for any length bar (the 2nd part)...either round/square or more current aero options. Check out the Yakima Railgrab or Timberline options, and the Crossroads or Aeroblade systems from Thule. There are others, these are probably the most common for 'bar only' style roof racks.
