I was actually thinking of water inside the cargo area, but your point is definitely valid for fuel. I'm way too fond of my 4Runner to see it resemble the diy convertible FJ I keep seeing. :hatsoff:
BTW, I'm liking the way your basketcase install looks, and the price is much more wallet friendly than a lot of the other options out there.

Getting ready for a trip this fall and will be ordering these soon!
So after your Summit trip was the 2-gallon version adequate? Would you recommend going with the 3-gallon version of the Rotopax containers?
I am also thinking of putting these on the sunroof insert, then I just throw the insert in when I am really heading out into the boonies and need the extra fuel and water... so would putting these on the sunroof insert be a good way to go?
Anything else to add after your big trip?

For my purpose the 2 Gallon was fine, BUT I didn't camp. If you were to use them as emergency fuel AND cooking fuel on a longer camping trip you may want to go with the 3 gallon. There was no wind noise and no "sloshing noise under normal road usage. You do hear them slosh on the trail. I did not feel that the weight was an issue.
I did notice that the 2 gallon DOES NOT hold 2 gallons. I was only able to fill it with 1.89 gallon of fuel. I also was not able to freeze the water one because unless you have a separate larger freezer (I have a big drawer at the bottom of my fridge) you will not be able to fit the pack in.
All in all I'm happy with my choice. As far as mounting location; I dont have the sunroof insert so i can't speak to that but I liked them on the rear since that's more set up to carry additional weight compared to the front end of the car.

Hmmm... I may have to look at the 3-gallon versions.
I do notice the dimensions between the 2 and 3-gallon packs are different instead of just being deeper/thicker. I will have to measure the sunroof insert to determine what might be best.
I remember seeing another thread where someone did mount their Rotopax on the sunroof insert. I like the idea of putting them there, then the mounts are easy to deal with and not on the rack all the time. And I only really need these for longer more remote trips. Before heading out throw up the sunroof insert, then I can free up the rest of the Gobi for other things if necessary as well.
As for sloshing, for me the Rotopax container will be to replenish the fuel/water supply and the pack emptied all at once. Trying to keep them either full or empty should help in minimizing any of the sloshing noise I think.

You'll have the sloshing either way (unless empty) because how how full you can fill the packs. as full as I could get mine I still had some room for them to slosh, but again, I only heard it as I was bouncing around on the trail and it didn't bother me there. my fire extinguisher made some rattling noise as well in those situations.
I was more disappointed in not having the capacity compared to any noise I got.

Well that certainly helps!
I am not seeing 3-gallon water packs though if you want to combine with a 3-gallon fuel pack.
If you're really getting out there, maybe the best way to go is two 3-gallon fuel packs, then two 2-gallon water packs.

That must also be what the dimension difference is; you don't have the interlocking offsets at the bottom of the pack. I'm not convinced you are missing anything by that though. However since they don't make a 3 gallon water... maybe put your 3 gallon fuel on the swing gate for that rear bumper and 2 waters on the roof? or 2 rows; one water and one fuel as you indicated.

Hey Okki...I have found that YOUR 4 Gallon gas usually comes in handy to help others in distress and still have some left over for your own reserve. . So I now carry a 4 Gal Rotopax on my rear swingout and 2- 3 gallon Rotopax on roof rack. Last year at Summit, I had 2 6 gallon Attwood gas cans on top. My boys and I decided to venture on our own and take Immogene pass from Ouray to Telluride ( very awesome trip BTW) Never had to worry about fuel!
Also if you haven't made hotel arrangements...I would HIGHLY recommend you talk to the folks at OURAYVACATIONS.net . We stayed in a 2 story house with private stream in back yard, complete with fire pit and bbq. it was about $1100 for the week. The place could have easily slept 6 people.

I mounted mine on my Rhinorack. Used the universal mounting plate and it bolted right up to my rack

I recently (back in Oct. 2017) got my TRD Off Road and have been looking for what I want to do in the future and add to my wishlist. :laugh:
I still need to figure out what rack I want to mount the Rotopax on but seeing what Okki and FatDave did gave me a few ideas.

Rotopack Expansion
I didn’t check the forum to determine the frequency that this has been reported, but FYI my square, red, Rotopack gas container permanently expanded like a balloon (1/2” per flat side) when it contained fuel and was exposed, laying flat on the top of my vehicle, to the extreme temperatures of Moab, Canyonlands, etc. I won’t use it again like that. I use it for snowthrower fuel storage in my garage. Stay safe.
