Rotors, Resurface or Replace?

Hi All

I was getting my tires rotated and the mechanic said the rear pads and the rotors need to be replaced. The question is can I resurface the rotors? If so, what is the minimum thickness the rotors have to be to resurface?

The current thickness of my rotor wall is 4.4 mm. Clarification, that measurement was just one of the rotor walls and and not all the way across. Didn’t think about measuring all the way across. So if both side are lets say 4.5mm and the cooling gap is about 5mm that should give it a total measurement of 14mm? I’ll see if I can measure it later.

Anyway, I know most rotor now days are thinner and use cheaper metals and are just a one time use. However, I thought I read somewhere that the 4Runners rotors are still old school and can be resurfaced.

I looked on the Toyota.parts.com to order them but neither the rotors or the brake pads are available. So can someone recommend another online place that offers a good price? Also can an someone verify that I have the correct factory OEM part numbers?

Hi All

I'd just replace the rotors and pads. I prefer Raybestos or AC Delco advanced technology slotted rotors, which are from the same manufacturer. They use G3000 material:

What is G3000 Brake Rotor Material?
Brake rotors are made from gray cast iron. Gray iron has a graphitic misconstruction; that’s what give it it’s gray color. The raw materials contain iron, carbon, graphite, silica and pearlite. However G3000 is a brake rotor formula that contains a higher percentage of carbon to give added strength and sound damping qualities.

G3000 brake rotor
A G3000-qualified brake rotor contains certain raw materials that comply with industry standards. It is a high carbon mix containing:

• Carbon 3.10%-3.40%
• Silicon 1.90%-2.30%
• Manganese 0.60%-0.90%
• Sulfur Max 0.15%
• Phosphorus Max 0.15%,
For a total Carbon equivalent of 3.9%-4.15%.

I also use the top of the line Raybestos ceramic pads.
 
i kept the stock rotors but did replace them. i'm planning to turn them when/if the autozone ones wear out. I didn't want to have any down time when i did the brakes, otherwise i wouldve had them turned.

stock ones were warped, feels way better now.
 
I think I may have found my answer.

When to change the brake rotors

Here are the specs from Toyota:

Front brakes - every 5k or 6 mo for visual; every 30k or 36 mo for measurements

Torque specs:
Brake caliper mounting bolts - 137 lb-ft (19mm)

Service Specs:
Pad min thickness: 1.0 mm
Rotor min thickness: 29.0 mm
Max rotor runout: 0.05 mm

Parts:
Rotors - Toyota part # 43512-60191
Pads - Toyota part # 04465-60320

Tips:
1) Measure runout 10 mm from outer edge of rotor; rotor should be installed with all 6 lug nuts torqued to 82 lb-ft when checking
2) If runout > max, check bearing play and axle hub runout normal before replacing rotors
3) If rotor stuck on hub, use an M8-1.25 bolt in holes on rotors to break it free
4) Install new rotors in position with least amount of runout
5) DIY thread

Tips:
