Rotten egg smell when i gas it out

hi all

i have a 08 4 runner w the v6 motor. car idles fine, runs and drives fine. when i get on it, i smell rotten eggs. (especially when the rear window is open)! i noticed that one of the "shields", that wrap around the catalytic converter under the car is missing. does this shield serve a purpose? the car passes emmissions. there are no check engine lights on? what could be the cause? if its the converter, how do you know which one it is, and is it covered under warranty? thanks everyone

Egg smell is usually associated with a failing catalytic converter. It might not be enough to cause CELs but do have it checked out if you have the time.

Also, what "shield" are you talking about? The exterior shell? If that's missing then you really need a new one.

Not with a failing cataytic converter, but with the 4th gen cat converter.

It's a known problem search for Rotten Egg Smell or Sulfur smell and you'll find a few Toyota Service Bulletins (TSBs) about it and some possible ways to fix it the best being re-routing the exhaust to vent out the side instead of the back.
