Router Help

I am seeking help in searching for a new router. I would go to another forum, but I really don't feel like going through the process of finding one, registering, etc. So you all get to help me.

I am in need of another router for my home network. Looking to spend no more than $150. Whatever I get needs to be wireless (and 4 ports at least wired) and my other stipulation is that it needs to allow me to allot bandwidth to each port. Meaning I need to be able to give one port less bandwidth, as well as others more.

The only router I have found so far that will allow that is the D-Link DGL 4300.

Does anyone have any personal experience with this router or know of any others? This router is designed for gaming, but that is not what I am needing it for...I just have a roomate who likes to suck bandwidth.

Any router that has the Quality of Service (QOS) protocol should do the trick. This feature allows you to limit the bandwidth of specific applications (games etc).

I am not looking to limit applications necessarily, I just need to put a bit of a cap over an entire port, would QOS allow that as well? Or does it only make the distinction of what sort of application is accessing the network and adjust accordingly?

isnt it qos is more effective going upstream? coming from a computer in a home network goint to the internet.

Personally, I've never liked D-Link products -- my experience is that they seem to be harder to get to work than anyone else's. I prefer Netgear, but don't believe they have anything like you want for $150.

Just curious, what's driving the need to limit bandwidth on a port? Why not just use a switch and let every machine have full access?

From the quick research I did I found that most QOS enabled routers can only limit bandwidth to specific applications. To be able to limit traffic at the port you would have to step up to more expensive commercial grade routers from Cisco etc..
