RS3000 and Power Lock Problems?

Hey everyone. I've had my 4Runner for about 5 months now, and everything works perfectly, but I'm having some issues with the power locks/security system. Recently, when I open my door, and start the truck and it's cold or raining outside, the locks will cycle over and over, sometimes for 1 second or two, and other times for 10-15 seconds. I dislike this a lot because I don't want to wear out the actuators for the locks. It only does it after I start the truck, I've read other threads where it happens randomly, but mines only when the truck starts up, and only sometimes.

Next, I was going over the service records from the PO and found that he took it in because the piezo chirper stopped working, and I was like, "It's supposed to make a sound when it locks? That would be so much nicer" So I set off to figure it out. Couldn't get it working, tried everything. I was convinced it was blown. Yesterday, I decided to poke around in the owners manual just to check it out, and I ended up reading the RS3000 VIP System owners manual, and realized you could turn on and off the chirper. I turned it on, and it worked! I was stoked, but today, I go to unlock it, and the piezo didn't chirp. I turned it back on again, and it didn't even chirp to alert that it's back on.

I really want this chirper to work, and want to fix the locks going crazy, so any help would be amazing, and if anyone could link me a wiring diagram for the security system that'd be awesome (I'm hoping it's not a wiring issue). Thanks!

This could really be a pile of little issues. My locks freaked out when I changed my doors on the one 4 runner. I actually had to adjust the lock rods in the doors to get that to stop. I really doubt that's your issue.


In the early years the security system was and add on. In the later years it was factory built into the rigs.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see a year of truck specified.

I would thoughly check the drivers side door and the tailgate boots for broken wires. If you have a lock mechanism or a broken wire in the door jam it may explain the behavior.

Are your door light switches functioning properly as they to can cause issues with your alarm as well.

It’s a 98. So I think it’s an add on. I’ll take a look at the wires tomorrow. Thanks for the help
 
Subbed. New 98 4runner owner here too. My piezo only works when it wants to. I think when it doesn’t work The lights don’t flash either, but could be it was too sunny to notice. My door open interior light switch works. I’ll look at my wiring too. Hope it just piezo is worn out. Where is the driver/relay usually located? On the chirper?
 
It is most likely on the circuit board of the alarm. It could be a chip or a relay.

If you know how to solder it’s really worth reflowing all the solder joints in the board.

The piezos die. It is a Floyd Bell M-80. Located in that tight space to the side of the battery and fuse box. It is wrapped in foam and zip tied to the hood cable.
 
Yes Pre to 2001 they are all add-ons. I could be wrong but I think the dealers were the ones that added them in. After 2001 the wiring is in the truck harness and are basically built into the vehicles.

The locks would cycle and the car was immobile and the horn was ON. I took the box out, let it dry and plugged it back in. (I later cleaned it more thoroughly when I was able to get home).

Side-note: this happened after a hike near Wenatchee in the middle of no-where!

My piezo has "never" worked. I say never because randomly last week it chirped a few times while lock/unlocking the truck, then stopped again.
[MENTION=71030]T4R2014[/MENTION] Thanks for the Piezo info! Might just order a new one for giggles to see if it works again. It's nice knowing when it's locked since the alarm is armed and disarmed (locked/unlocked) by the same single button.
 
Funny I just disabled the auto lock feature this afternoon and now it chirps every time. It even chirped during the programming which I figured it wouldn’t.

Thanks would never have found it without this description. I expected it to be bigger and wouldn’t have thought to look inside foam.

I removed my factory bug deflector and it started chirping every time. I read someone else hood switch was causing a problem. If there is something that detects if hood is open or closed fully I guess that was my problem?
 
I ordered a new beeper, but since I programmed the auto lock feature off and since I did that my beeper has worked ever since. Funny.......

Confirm that the RS3000 is what you have. The Securikey system has a hood switch, but I doubt your truck in Oahu has it.

Interesting, I'll try that as I was thinking about turning the auto lock feature off anyways

Yes it is rs3000, I checked under driver seat and looked at model number on box before ordering remote. 4runner is from the mainland though. Looked around the hood latch earlier because it’s not chirping again today. Didn’t see anything. Checked the wiring from door to body didn’t see any broken wires. I’ll order a new piezo and see what happens
 
I took a minute to peek under the dash and try to see where the piezo wiring goes once it’s inside the firewall. Looked like it went high near the gauge cluster. Is it worth it to take dash apart and look for breaks in the wire up there or is it unlikely to have? T4r2014 do you know where it connects to up there? My factory service manual didn’t arrive yet
 
Update: For about the past week it has stopped cycling the locks when I turn it on in the morning, and the chirper was working about 50% of the time yesterday. This leads me to believe I have a short somewhere, anybody know where I should look first?

Did you order a new piezo? I just got my replacement in. Hope to have time to do it before the end of the week. Hopefully it fixes my problem.

The other morning when I unlocked it and opened a back passenger door it locked itself then alarm went off. The door light went off right before this happened. Checked door switch multiple times since then and it always seems to work. Sometimes when I have that door open I notice the light dims/flickers little bit. Will buy new door switch if new piezo doesn’t solve problem
