RTT and surfboards

I am planning on putting a long Baja rack on the new TE. This fall I am going to be traveling cross country with the lady and hounds for about 4-6 weeks camping, rock climbing and surfing. I am leaning towards doing the RTT but I want to bring two surfboards with me as well. The best I can come up with is put bars across the baja rack to mount the RTT to and try to put the surfboards under the tent. Anybody have any better suggestions or reasons why I should not do this?

The flat rack?

I would build something around the tent so that the boards slide and fasten over the top. You'd have to move them to deploy it.

I guess we also need to know which way you're planning on deploying it. If your going of the rear than make two board holders on either side of the tent.

I am planning to deploy to the passenger side for now. I thought about building a couple U shape extensions to hold the surfboards on top of the tent. I like this idea, I dont mind throwing the surfboards off to deploy as I will be up there anyways.

I had planned on the rack with the six inch sides, not the flat rack.

I welded up some custom brackets to hold my hilift and awning.they mount to the Gobi on one side. I used 1" dia. shaft collars welded to a steel plate. Imagine that but with enough width to hold a board(and miss the side of the tent, it may have to off set)

i'd rig an additional set of crossbars on top of the RTT for the boards. underneath the RTT (atop the BajaRack) sounds really dodgy. (and the boards' rocker will prevent strapping them to the flat rack directly.)

how many boards, btw? if you could trim the quiver to one magic shape, i'd consider just mounting it inside the cab (standing on its rail) and save yourself the hassle.

sounds like an awesome trip, btw.

I will have three boards and one is a slug single fin 8'. None of the boards I am carrying have much rocker even my 6'2 quad fish. You know there is no magic board, if there was I would not have surfboards strung across 2 states, a US territory and Australia lol!

Right now its looking like building some cross bars that are higher than the RTT is the best option. I am stoked about the trip! I did a trip like this last year across Australia in a rented Land Cruiser 70 series, it was epic and my girl friend and I had that Cruiser packed down like a pack mule. it was a beast the whole way! I so wish we could get the 70 here
