hey guys i'm pretty new to the T4R forum and to NorCal as well. just purchased an '03 T4R SR5 V6 4x4 and its got some modifications coming as soon as i get my financials in order. just wondering how hard would it be for me to go off and do the rubicon trail if i were to take it easy on my vehicle? i don't want to go and break some things but i do want to experience the trail. can a stock V6 4th gen make this trail so long as i go around all the hard stuff?

Lol no.... minimum requirements are 33s, sliders, and hopefully front and rearbumpers unless you don't mind smashing the stockers, and one locker. My Buddha have been through it no body damage, but there Tacoma's on 33s and 35s fully armored.

Maybe, with an experienced spotter and lots of rock stacking.
But don't. Do everyone a favor and start your wheeling hobby with trails that are appropriate for your truck and skill level. If you decide you like wheeling, the mods will begin, and you'll be Rubicon-ready soon enough.

I'd bring recovery equipment, two spare CV's, spare TRE's, a spare tire, hi-lift jack, appropriate tools, knowledge of how to work on your truck, etc. If you break and don't have a spare part, the solid axle guys will not have spare IFS parts for you.
I think clearance will be your main issue. You'll be very slow going and be prepared to move out of the way for others. Go with another truck so he can pull you off the rock you high-centered yourself on.
It also depends what you consider "hard". There aren't just bypasses for everything, and where there are, you might not find the easy line that easy.

Do some more research on trails near you. Go exploring. Start small and don't out-drive your mods or you WILL break. Make sure you have the tools to do basic repairs on the trail. We are considering a CV replacement basic.
I'm thinking of doing the Snake Lake trip when I get home. You could make it to the camp site but the trail would still require 33's and a lift and as always some spares. It's a fun trail. One or two nights of camping. Not sure when, but we'll let ya know!

I'll be the evil voice of decent here at the risk of being flamed. I took a stock 93 Cherokee, pit 31s on it and Rocky Road sliders, no lockers, lift, skids, bumpers, nothing. With only a high lift and a spare I managed to run the whole trail solo vehicle 4 times, 2 times to Tahoe and then back to the dam 2 days later. No rock stacking, one cut sidewall, and one dent on the underside of my rear quartepanel. I did do it every time mid week so as not to hold anyone up but it can be done if you can drive. My 31 big at's were at about 15 lbs and I has 3mountain bikes on the roof, along with passengers and gear

thanks for the input folks. i'm still itching pretty bad to go and tackle the rubicon but with your guys input i'm deciding against it until i can afford to make my runner more trail friendly. plus the wife who drives it most of the time has expressed a deep conviction to me putting any sort of lift till after our first child has made his debut into this world. she's 4'10" and already has a tough time climbing into the stock runner with the running boards on. so the mods will have to wait. sucks because i want to take this thing out so badly and run the rubicon above all else. the monotany of work and being in vacaville is killing me slowly. but thanks alot for your guys input, i would hate to take all the time of convincing the wife that we should go and try to do that trail and go camping just for me to make a mistake that injures the vehicle to where i can't get home and it cost me alot to fix it and, worst of all, lose any credibility for convincing her to run future trails with me. haha

You don't need to register to go, registration just includes the tri-tip dinner and a grand prize raffle ticket etc. It's so much fun you guys will have the time of your life.
hell yeah man i'd love to go but at the moment i have an almost completely stock and feel like i would just hold everyone up if i were to actually try and do the trail with lack of trail friendly setup. let me win powerball once is all i'm saying. haha

Ha! I think there would only be a couple of us lol. I did Rubicon last weekend and it's no highway. I did see a very built IFS taco there though. There are still some pretty knarly sections there that had me a little puckered mainly because I'm scared of heights, I can't help it! Off camber climbs with drop offs next to you can suck it.

I just read this hahaha, there was 2 ifs tacomas. Both friends of mine and I was a passenger that weekend. Mild lift lots of armor, 33s and 35s. If it wasn't us they had a long travel buddy on his way in Sunday when we left. They have both ran it multiple times. Trail damage and such, not for a stock rig. One of them ran little sluice in front of jeeps who couldn't make it :hand: both rigs will be out there for mcr. I also saw a solid axle 3rd. Gen on there but it was more of a desert dune color. Solid axle but sat nice and low. Clean rig.

You should cruise out to Donner Ski Ranch for the Calrocs event August 16/17 (this weekend) and watch the buggies compete, biggest Calrocs of the year. Come say hi to us at the Slag Factory booth.
