"Rumble Strip" Transmission issue

Thanks,

Yes it was rebuilt just over 1.5 months ago. I have put 4k+ miles on the rebuilt and have 10+ months to go until warranty expires.

Ill be dropping the car off at the shop this afternoon on the way home from work. Cant wait to see what they have to say. Hopefully the issue resolved in a timely fashion.

Good luck. Hopefully it's something benign but pls update here if it ends up being the TC.

I had posted here a while back on this same issue , since then I have had my manifolds replaced (pacesetters) been 500 mi. & no noise ? I have no clue why could be totally unrelated or something on oem manifolds rubbing . I did the flush at about 107k tranny felt really good & even when the noise came it felt right , dealership assumed it was my urd y-pipe making noise or a heat shield loose but nothing . Exact same as ducman originaly reported & everyone since IDK , but pleasantly surprised for sure . Will report back it returns .

Rumble

I never heard of such a problem until I hit this forum. I gotta say what I did, as you can see, fixed my problem. At least for now. I would recommend to anyone, based on my experience, to add the "Shudder Fixx" when you have the fluid changed/flushed. This problem occurs in all make vehicles. I just rented a 2014 Chevy Malibu with 17,000+ miles and it had terrible shudder, even with these low miles. Your transmission is fine, it's the torque converter.

First post here folks.. Lots of great information.

SYMPTONS:
rumble strip between 35-45.
only happens in D
only happens when slowly accelerating.
does not do it at all when in 4
If i accell fast it dosnt skip a beat and slides right into gear.
no rumble on decell
everything else is butter smooth.

I have an 05 v8 with right at 138k miles.

At 90k miles I installed a class 3 hitch and did a tranny flush with no issues until 133k miles. 4runner srated bucking hard when towing my boat and trailer

Took it to a transmission specialist here in the area and he rebuilt the tranny for 2890. came with a 1 year some odd mile warrenty. I asked for an itemized reciept at the time but he did not produce... no worries i have the warrenty cert in hand and I feel comfortable with his work. He took me into his shop and showed me the transmission and all parts that were bad and went above and beyond what I've experienced with other mechanics.

At 138k im experienceing the rumble strip issue for the first time and wondering if they did not put a Toyota WS equivalent in it. Before the rumble strip symptons everything shifted as if it were new..

One note: shortly before I had the tranny rebuilt I noticed a loud clunk when stoped and shifting from park to drive. After the rebuild it went away and now its back which leads me to believe that the TC is already passed its service life.

What ya guys think?

Thanks,
NUC

Rumble strip fix

Try this stuff. I tried one tube, the shutter went away for a maybe a week**, then came back. Bought another tube put it in. Haven't had a problem since. Hopefully this stuff works for you guys. Got almost 150,000 on my 05 4runner limited 4wd sitting on 36s. I think it started about 110,000 miles with the rumble strip.. bought this stuff at O'Reilly's. Instant shutter fix by dr.tranny........:thumb3::guitar3::ak472::bash::

I've read good reviews about this product. Waiting for someone on her that's used it to comment on this.

Rumble Strip

I remember when I took it to toyota. It used to do the rumble strip 40-45 mph, and slow acceleration. Fast acceleration it shifted fine. They said it was the torque converter, they recommended me to do 3 tranny flushes, or to replace both the tranny and torque converter, and they said it's most common in the Tundras. I didn't want to do 3 tranny flushes, or too replace it, thats just too much $$$. A friend recommended this product to me. He worked at O'Reilly's for years..He told me it most common on the Fords..

So I took the runner in and they diagnosed it as the lock up clutch in side the torque converter. needless to say they are going to pull it and replace it under warranty. Will report my findings after I get it back in my possession.

Glad they're doing it under warranty. Hope that's the fix!

So I'm picking the car up in a few minutes... He said its back up to above OEM spec. He uses dextron 3 compatable flued and adds a friction modifier by lube guard that molecularly changes the fluid. Its a slick 50 product and said he puts what ever lube guard is recommended in the trannys that he rebuilds. Apparently lube guard has a product for every make out there. I'll let y'all know how it goes in about a week.

Cheers,
Nuc

Got a CEL P24637 if my memory serves me right. Transmission temp Circut B too high.

About to go back in the shop once again.

Was this work done at Toyota dealership ? Pretty sure they would've used WS fluid not that ?

Services so far have been performed at transmission shop. shop got great reviews on the internet. Hopefully i can give them a positive one as well. Frustrating as all getup but i have faith for some reason or another lol

That said then, would purchase the WS fluid & start there 1st . Some of the guys that do their own drain & fill will tell you same IMO .

Stop the rumble

bought this stuff at O'Reilly's. Instant shutter fix by dr.tranny........:thumb3::guitar3::ak472::bash::

Situation:
2007 4runner SR5 V6 2wd 175,000 mostly highway.
"Shudder / rumble" started about 150k and slowly got worse
Product added with no change yet approx 5 miles (at time of edit)
if problem not solved will begin introducing fresh fluid 3qts at a time

*My friend keeps saying due to principal its best not to change tranny fluid based on particulates / shavings in the fluid.

I had the rumble strip issues with my wifes 08 Honda CRV at about 110K. It happened at about 30-40 mph upon acceleration, especially on uphill grade. Thank goodness she told me right away and did not drive for that long with the issue. I immediately brought it in for a tranny fluid drain and fill. I added 2 tubes of the Dr Tranny Shudder Fixx, based on all the information I could obtain on this issue from the internet. The rumble strip went away. I now do a change at every 20K just to keep fluid fresh and have not added any more tubes. It now has 170K and all is good.

As far as my 04 V8 runner goes, I bought it with 147K with no history of any transission oil changes and there was a very good history report from dealer only service by original owner. I searched here on the forum and it was crazy with different opinions on whether to do a flush or not. Even the dealers had different opinions! A lot of people said dont do the flush because of the age and it will stir things up and dont fix whats not broken (truck shifts smoothly), some dealers said sealed tranny and leave it alone, other dealers said do a flush it wont hurt anything. So I did nothing over all the confusion, until just recently, I noticed tranny fluid leaking slightly from the transmission cooler lines up front by the radiator due to rusty line. I had this line replaced by my mechanic. Since I did not really know exactly how much fluid had been leaking and for how long I decided to just bring it into Toyota dealer to have a complete flush done. I am so glad I did for peace of mind!!! I did not notice anything diffferent afterwards in regards to smoother shifting or anything but at least I know now there is fresh WS fluid in there. My recommendation is to get the fluid exchanged with dealer machine. The dealer told me the machine exchanges the fluid and it is not performed under high pressure and they have done hundreds of exchanges without any problems reported.

Now to replace my rusty power steering lines which looked worse than the transmission lines!!! Uggghhh!

I. tell ya. It's worked fine for me, so far. No issues since I added the shudder fix. I would replace what fluid I can and not flush. I that doesn't resolve the issue, then I would flush.

I haven't read the whole thread, but it sounds like this may be caused by the flex lockup mode of the torque converter lockup clutch. See page 29 of this document: http://www.toyotatundraforum.com/pdf/A750E.pdf

I don't understand how flex lockup works, but it sounds like it's not completely locked, and from the diagram in that document it looks like it's using some kind of periodic pulse applied to the torque converter clutch. I can't imagine how that could be smooth, but I guess it works most of the time. Feel free to speculate about what might be wrong when the shuddering happens. My guess is that maybe the clutch is grabbing or slipping too much, which is why new fluid or an additive could help. Another guess is if the sensor that generates the "input turbine speed signal" is bad, since maybe the lockup signal is timed to match variation in the input speed? There shouldn't be that much variation in input speed, though. Either way, the whole flex lockup thing doesn't make sense to me, and there's not enough data in that document to figure out how it works. But 40-45mph is about when the transmission locks up, IIRC.

Not better

Added the shudder stopper approx 300 miles ago didn't help.

With cold transmission:
Removed filler plug
Removed the level check plug - approx 1 quart drained (is that normal?)
Removed drain plug - approx 2 quarts
For a total of just shy of 3 quarts but I'll say 3.
Wiped everything down.
The fluid I removed had 175k on it (brownish / black / foul odor)
Replaced the drain plug
Replaced the level check plug
Replaced with 3 quarts castrol import
Installed filler plug
Re wiped everything down
Cranked up and selected all gears 2x
Test dive
!!!!! SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN RUMBLE STRIP OFF THE BAT!!!!
Will continue the 3 quart drain until fluid runs red
Maybe 3 more drains
