Running boards, keep or remove?

I've seen two styles of running boards. A older style vs. the latest style. Does the older style actually sit higher then the latest version? I realize the older style pic is lifted but it still seems as it hugs the body a bit better. Yes, no?

I'm thinking of heading to the dealer tomorrow to buy Trail Edition Boards for my SR5 !
im not sure if i'll get them off before this weekend but if you are interested, i'll give you a fair price, oh yeah bought this t4r on tues so they only have about 100 miles on them and two foot prints
Probably need something in terms of a running board or step
First, I found this thread and am resurrecting it as opposed to starting a new one. Hope that works out and I get good recommendations. I learned some things from reading through these pages.
Like my recently purchased 2015 Trail Premium maybe should have come with running boards? It did not. Sort of miffed, if that is correct. I'm going to text the salesman but expect nothing at this point.
I'm a total novice at this stuff. So...
I quoted the above post because it echo's my problem. First I'm very short. But I can get in ok. I hitch up my hip and its not to bad. I feel like a running board might actually get in the way of that.
But......getting down is a slide down the side of the seat and I feel like the seat will break it down. It happened on my 1997 Blazer which this 2015 is replacing and the seat is far lower. (I would have swapped out the passenger seat for the driver seat but I guess you can't do that which is stupid but whatever).
Anyway, I would like to alleviate damaging the drivers seat by something that assists getting out, and getting in or at least not getting in the way.
Something that deflects rocks and rust would be a side benefit. My Blazer has been very well maintained mechanically but is a Michigan rust bucket
I would prefer something that doesn't make the car wider. Its already wider than the Blazer and I feel like its harder to park and I'm going to sideswipe something. I'll probably get used to it at some point. I'm still driving the Blazer mostly at this point.
As to ground clearance, mostly State and Natl forest truck trails that are dirt, sand, mud, gravel, pot holes. I think there is plenty of clearance since I'm not hitting the pot holes at speed. If, on the odd occasion I think ground clearance is an issue (snow/winter) it would be nice to have something that comes off easily but is not a deal breaker.
Would a rock step be enough?
I'm the only person usually in this if that matters.
P.S. Do I need mud flaps too?

I'd check out nfab nerf bars, I like the look and price but they won't protect like sliders do as they are not mounted to the frame. There's tons of pics on here and they have a solid place to step to get in/out
Also, the running boards are not standard on the premium

Is anyone worried about trashing their seat(s) getting in and out w/o a step / slider? My old Taco was pretty beat to crap after ten years of sliding off the seat.

They look practical. Is there any reason to consider a regular running board in terms of stopping rock chips etc? I saw that mentioned in this thread as a running board positive. If I were to go with running boards, is it best to get Toyota ones?
For all that matters I was hit on the drivers side by a keep Cherokee running a red light almost dead center. The factory running boards on that trail premium took most of the collision's first impact and probably helped me walk away with no major injuries.

Wow, glad to hear you weren't hurt worse. So....do the running boards stick out that much further?
Maybe what I'm asking is
Nerf steps vs. running boards - will one be easier to step down off of or are the nerf things recommended because of looks or price?
I'm pretty practical. I want what will work best and if it stops rocks (or Jeeps) that is a side bonus. Never having had a vehicle with either i'm not sure I can stop people in parking lots and ask to try theres.

It always seems like most of the suggestions for nerf bars on this site are because of the looks. I mean, who wants to have the same OEM stuff that every other soccer mom does, right? :laugh: :behindsofa:
I have the OEM running boards on our truck that my wife and kids use to get in and out. I don't typically mount anything on our roof rack but I use it often when washing the rig. Our off pavement driving is typically limited to dirt/gravel roads and I do hear rocks and junk hitting the bottom of the running boards. Whether or not those rocks would have hit any paint without them who knows, but so far they're pretty nice for peace of mind.
My previous truck didn't have running boards either so I wasn't sure about buying them at first. But so far they've been worth the investment for what we do with the truck.

I think there are several different styles of "factory" running boards that are available throughout the country. These are the running boards that came on my 4Runner from the dealer. My dealer called them "tube steps". I have seen a very close replica of these running boards called the Westin Pro Traxx Oval 4" Oval Nerf Bars. EDIT: A closer replica is the Go Rhino 4" (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/203015-go-rhino-step-sides.html).
They stick out 4". I'm pretty sure they don't hinder my ability to navigate my truck through a parking lot or put it in a parking place. They provide a great step to get up/down. My 70 year old mom who is 5' 1" finds them very helpful when getting into my 4R. These are very practical.
I will probably take these off and replace them with C4Fab sliders at some point, because I want the extra off-road protection that sliders provide (vs nerf bars/running boards).
