Running boards, keep or remove?

Wow, glad to hear you weren't hurt worse. So....do the running boards stick out that much further?



Maybe what I'm asking is

Nerf steps vs. running boards - will one be easier to step down off of or are the nerf things recommended because of looks or price?

I'm pretty practical. I want what will work best and if it stops rocks (or Jeeps) that is a side bonus. Never having had a vehicle with either i'm not sure I can stop people in parking lots and ask to try theres.

Thanks man. In my opinion the OEM boards are more practical and comfortable to use for every day use. I believe on a trail model they are bolted on ) and can stop jeeps as well

I think there are several different styles of "factory" running boards that are available throughout the country. These are the running boards that came on my 4Runner from the dealer. My dealer called them "tube steps". I have seen a very close replica of these running boards called the Westin Pro Traxx Oval 4" Oval Nerf Bars.

They stick out 4". I'm pretty sure they don't hinder my ability to navigate my truck through a parking lot or put it in a parking place. They provide a great step to get up/down. My 70 year old mom who is 5' 1" finds them very helpful when getting into my 4R. These are very practical.

I will probably take these off and replace them with C4Fab sliders at some point, because I want the extra off-road protection that sliders provide (vs nerf bars/running boards).

I found this link where I guess you can buy OEM Toyota stuff and what, have your own mechanic install (or install yourself but I can't right now)

So while I figure out exactly what running boards I'm going to get I start researching mud flaps. A forum search doesn't come up with anything for mud but I did find a thread that made it sound like OEM running boards and mudflaps might not be compatible?

IMHO I would remove them and add sliders. If you have young/short people or elderly people in your day-to-day life you will have a better off-road equipped vehicle with the ability for those individuals to use the sliders as steps to help them climb in. They also keep the shopping carts at bay. And most importantly you T4R will look better.:hatsoff:
