Running high current lines to cargo area

I need to run 1/0 ga power and ground to the cargo area, possible both sides. I figure the best way is to run them under the chassis then come up through the floor somewhere in the back.

Any suggestions on good locations to come up through the floor in the back that are behind the panels?

I would personally (depending on what your running them for) run them through the engine bay firewall and then run them along side driver and/or passenger side through to the rear**EDIT: inside the truck**. I did this for all my rigid lights. Its clean and out of the way with little to worry. Why you running your ground all the way back there? I would ground it in the cargo area...?

I'd keep them in the truck,on the pass side along the door sills where the factory wires are ran back to there. There's a hole in the rubber plug for a main harness on the pass side firewall to get it inside under the dash on the pass. side.Once you pull up the plastic door sill covers ,you will see the other wires and lots of room for more.There's already a couple of grounding points back there.

If you do run it outside and up,I would stay away from the fuel and brake lines running up the drivers side. There are some rubber plugs in the body that you can feed it up through. But won't be easy.

What are you running them for?

Ham radio gear with amps, multiple stereo amps, a 1.5Kw inverter. With ham gear, you don't use chassis ground for power, you run ground right to the battery. The gear is going to end up on both sides do to the number of items so I'll need lines to both sides.

I don't know if there will be room in the existing electrical chases, 1/0 cable is 1/2" dia. add to this stereo signal wire, speaker wire, multiple 1/2" coax for ham radio and that's a lot of wire to add. Also it's not good practice to run power and coax next to each other, the coax will pick up noise from the power at the current levels I'm looking at.

I just ran wires for 8 LED rock lights up underneath . There's a gap between the frame and the body ,thats about an inch or two,so I ran them along the frame ,on top.That way it keeps them out of harms way. I cleaned the top of the frame and used a bunch of strips of 2" thick industrial velcro to hold them every 2-3ft ,but you may need to epoxy on some wiring clamps for bigazz wire your size. Like I said there are some rubber body plugs that you can take out and run the wires up and in ,then find a way to reseal them .The hard part is taking all the rear inside panels out to access them but it looks like your going to have to do that anyways.

Thanks for the link. I already planned on stripping the interior to that level to install equipment and I'm not looking forward to all the cuts and scraps that are waiting for me to start working on it.

Yep Tantrum's. Definitely a pain to run that much wire.I'll try to get some pics next weekend but plenty on ebay.

I wear "mechanix" gloves when I can and it's not really that bad.Those silver dimpled exhaust shields up underneath are what to watch out for as some are razor sharp.
I just worked bottom to top on the rear floor /panels taking them out.

this is what i did.....


8g attached to positive side of battery

throught the firewall (30amp maxi fuse installed prior to this)

under the trim in the factory wire tray

exit at the rear cargo area

6 point fuesd block with color coded wire

mounted in a pre-existing hole with ground bolt
