Rust problem?

Hey everyone,

I joined a couple months ago when I purchased a 1999 4Runner. I've got the bug now and am looking at another. This one spent some time in Alaska and has a little rust on the undercarriage. The owner also previously replaced the back/side bumpers because of rust.

I don't have a sense for how much rust is problematic and am hoping to get a couple of opinions. The owner sent these pictures. What do you think? Keep looking?

Thanks in advance.

Jake

Looks good to me. Dampness on both sides of the steering rack indicates probable leaking valve cover gasket, which is so normal at this age that it would be wierd if you found one that didn't.

Looks very good but that last shot makes me think I'd give it a good look over before I put my money down. Not that I see anything bad but the inner part (towards the center) of the frame looks like something might be starting there. Just paranoid--I'm from New England what can I say I've seen rust and bought my current Runner in S.Carolina to suffer oxidization in the salt of NH.

Ask Nelson. Make sure ya check the passenger side interior frame adjacent to the muffler. Looks good. If you'd like some rusty 4Runner parts I'll send 'em to ya -

Thanks everyone. This one seems a little too good to be true, so I wanted to be cautious. Hope to be posting about a successful purchase soon!

Looks good. Clean it up then paint it. Then enjoy your 4Runner.

CLEAN!! did you paint it ? What product did you use ? Do you do touch ups ?

Op just wire wheel the rust of, clean everything get some VHT CHASSY PAINT , nice product and spray it. But you will need to keep an eye for later touch ups as it will flake of due to rocks and stuff.

Hey guys I need your guys help with the rust on my 4runner. I have never really delt with rust as I have only lived in California and Texas. I bought my 4runner here in Texas from a guy who took it to Colorado all the time so there is some rust underneath. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

I'd get some wire wheels from harbour freight and start grinding the rust away. Always wear safety glasses !!! And get some vht chassy paint and repaint those areas.

Thanks a lot! I will defiantly look into getting some wire wheels and start repairing the rust. I'm still surprised that there hasn't been a frame recall for the 4runners just like the Tacomas and Tundras.
