picked up my 4R from the Toyota body shop yesterday. I had it in for some bumper/tail light damage, but also had them take care of the rust spot on the hatch near the emblem. They took care of everything. The rust on the hatch was covered under warranty and was fixed very well. They also spaced the emblem from the hatch, so hopefully this does not happen again. I was very happy with their work

I have a silver '15 Limited and I have been constantly fighting off little rust spots with a clay bar then carnuba wax. Getting tired of it. my 1999 also silver did not have any rust on the tail gate when I traded it in. So I brought it to Szott Toyota in Waterford Michigan and the service manager said its not Toyota's fault/problem. It is the metalic dust from brake pads and discs sticking to the car and oxydizing on the paint. He flat out told me that it was not covered under warranty. He told me to clay it as I have been then put clear nail polish to seal it from moisture. Bull$4it! There is a pre-existing problem here. The rule of thumb is that the dealer will get less for a job if paid under warranty than if paid out of pocket so they will resist until you die. I will have to contact Toyota myself and start the process. Its only February and I am having to clean-off 4 spots just from this winter. It was completely free of rust spots in October. Has anyone else contacted Toyota directly?

That is absolutely not good news and definitely bad for reputation. It sounds like a common problem. I will have to get a coat of clear coat this spring. I can't keep up with clay and wax. I already have a paid unlimited car wash plan. I can go there everyday, sometimes I do but I still get rust spots.

Little rust spots sounds like environmental fallout and doesn't have a darned thing to do with Toyota. I assume its not similar to the photos people have posted in this thread? You'd be getting the same specks on your paint if you were rolling around in a Bentayga.
Clay the paint every year or so to remove the fallout and stop parking near railroad tracks.

Your problem is rail dust, has nothing to do with the hatch rust being discussed in this thread.
While Toyota paint may be soft causing the metal dust to stick more, it is not rust under the paint and isn't supposed to be covered by the warranty.
You can continue to clay, or you could look into ceramic coating.

You know folks...the easy way to avoid rust...? Live in a place like Arizona! No rust issues for me, including my '94 Grand Cherokee that spent 6 years in NY 
So rust will happen... just wanted to know what luck some of you are having Getting these rust issues covered by Toyota.
My wife’s runner is 25 months, 44,xxx miles old, and use it as it was designed, take very good care of interior and exterior, but I have rust on the hatch and not by the trim. I am thinking rail dust but I would be very upset with the work I have put into this is has started already....
