I would be making a trip to the dealership ASAP! I hope they fix it, that will be a mess in no time.

noticed a rust spot on my rear gate. This is probably gonna spread if I dont fix it right?
I wonder if the warranty covers for repair of this?
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Were exactly is this? Pics from a little farther away plz. :thanks:

I had the exact same issue in the same location - right on the corner of the trim.

Mine was fixed under warranty.

Get it fixed, it spreads - fast.

Unless I slept in and it's 2018 already, you'll be covered on the rust perforation warranty. But do not delay and look closely for other areas.

Is this related to the power rear window provision? A classic feature of older Runners and Broncos with that sliding rear glass.

I've just checked mine - I don't have rust there. But mine is grey and I don't have chrome at the back.

I had a 2010 limited before and the inside of the tailgate was very rusted.. it was a chicago vehicle
.. but the rear hatch had also been repainted, so i dunno if that had anything to do with it.

Now I'll have to start investigating for rust on mine lol. Good luck.

My thoughts exactly!

So...I went out to inspect my tailgate trim just now and found something interesting (sorry forgot to snap pictures). Have any of you guys noticed that the trim gap is very close at this spot where OP's rust is found? It looks as if the plastic trim is almost touching the paint.

I wonder if it's some how chaffing every time we tug on it to open the tailgate (and wearing the paint away slowly)?

Once the weather get's better I think I want to pull off that trim and see about spacing it out very slightly to reduce the contact, if any.

rust issue covered under warranty

Took the car in... wait, took my "rig" in (:p not much of a rig, it's all stock) to the dealer and they took some pictures and verified that this will be covered under warranty.

Warranty is 5 years from purchase date regardless of mileage.

Check yours for rust issues, especially if you have a dark colored 4runner. I only noticed it because mine is silver.

dhuang - How old is your 4R?

Off topic, but I just spend 6 hours with clay bar on my 1 year old white 4R to get rid of all the small rust spots (industrial fallout, whatever people want to call it). I'm nervous about the 4R's paint because after having washed/waxed 3 other white cars over the years, I have never seen anything like this.

i have a 2010 sr5, bought it in 12/2009.
probably one of the first batch.

i have those spots with rusty color too, but they rub off.
Again, these will be more noticeable on light-colored paints.

Could be a lot of things. Park in the same spot/live in the same area? Any new industry? Winter was pretty crappy here in Nova Scotia, and I know you guys in Mass got hit hard too: more salt, more grim, slush, snow plow metal etc. Do you have the same commute- any closer to trains or train tracks or on a truck route?
