New to me: 87' T4R SR5

Thought I'd start a new thread for my newest project. Here's a quick run down. I sold my 86' 4runner that's in my signature (guess I should update that) It was a fun build, I will miss it, but that's why I picked up this 87' to help fill the empty void.

Here's a few pics of my last project: 86' T4R Deluxe:

^^^I sold my 86' after taking it from pretty much stock to what you see above, I had it for almost 4 years, my younger brother has it now, hopefully he has some fun with it!

Below are some pics of the 87' when I first picked it up about 4 mths ago for $1200. Its a SR5 with a 22re/5speed with 245,000 on the clock. It has awesome porn red interior, peeling clear coat, bent front and rear bumpers, bald tires and rusty passenger side rear quarter panel. Judging from all the hair and other "stuff" found inside, I believe it was used for a dog kennel at one time. On the plus side it runs like a champ (supposedly 80,000 on the motor, time will tell). The plan for this one is to build an expedition style rig, one that I can use for camping and is capable offroad but still dependable as a dd. I'm on the fence as whether or not this one will get a sas or not. My rational side says leave it IFS, but my compulsive side says do a SUA sas with a FJ60/62 front axel in the stock shackle upfront configuration. Not sure yet. Other plans include:

◆ New seats, change the interior color to grey
◆ Monsta-liner roll on bedliner for the exterior
◆ Build a bigger center console with cupholders
◆ Build a rear bumper with swing out spare tire carrier
◆ Build a safari rack
◆ Build a elevated platform in the rear with storage underneath
...im sure i will think and add more things down the road.

Nice, it that like purchasing a domain name before your webpage ideas are complete, or is it an investment. LOL

Lol, I was trying to build up some suspense, keep you guys on the edge of your seat!...

My last build was pretty long, so I like to keep that first post open to add links so I can go back and find stuff easier...I'm getting older, my minds startin to

So first on the list was some new shoes. I picked up some BFG KO2 31x10.50R15's and five SR5 Alloy wheels.(I still need to get a 5th tire matching tire for my spare wheel).

Looks like you have a lot of catching up to do on copy and pasting:lookout:

Hey Rob! Yeah I was a little bored today anyway, so I figured what the heck!

I did the Zuk mod using some Jeep TJ front coils, I cut them down aprox 5" and made them about 12" long, just to get rid of the sag and bring the back up level. I also installed my old Rancho shocks left over from my 86' T4R. They have aprox 2" more travel than the stock ones.

Here's a few pics after the install. I was pretty impressed with the ride, and they still flex decently.

I removed all the chrome fender well moulding, and chrome side trim, also the rock chip protectors in front of the rear wheel wells so I see how bad the rust really is. Surprisingly it's almost all on the passenger side lower quarter panel behind the wheelwell opening. The driverside looks great, I even opened the rear access panel on the inside and checked using a flash light, no signs of rust on the driverside.

I replaced the bent up front bumper with a cheap black one off ebay, looks good for now, I will eventually paint the grille and headlight bezels black to match, also removed the smashed front valance and added another tow hook to the driverside.

Before and after:

And all washed up!

I was driving home from work one night and there was a tree blown down across our driveway blocking part of the road. I slowly drove around and ran over some small tree limbs, no big deal. Somehow one of them found its way to the radiator!

So I replaced it with an all aluminum Koyo Racing radiator and cap. Went ahead and replaced the thermostat with a Toyota 2 stage thermostat while I was at it.

^^^I really need to clean up that engine bay!!!

Seats

I picked up some seats off Craigslist. The old ones were pretty thrashed, passenger side bucket wouldn't lean forward or recline correctly, plus I needed some motivation to change my interior over from red to grey. I got a set of 2006 Honda CRV buckets and a 98' Dodge durango middle split bench seat for $200 total.

^^^Woohoo, the kids get cupholders!!! :tea:

Looking good!! I had an old 87' with the pimp red interior and hated the red haha. Gutted it and rhino lined the whole inside

Ha, ha, yeah the red has got to go!

I got the front seats mounted, so the new grey is on the way, lol.The front Honda CRV buckets had some extra brackets bolted to them that added additional unwanted height to the seat, so I removed the extra bracket, you can see the height difference in the post #10 above.

^^^Here's the extra bracket I had to remove

^^^What I ended up doing was grinding the rivets off the bottom of my original seat sliders and removing the "feet" that bolt to the floor. With the seat already out I bolted the feet back down to the floor then tack welded some 1-1/2" wide by 1/8" thick flat bar stock across. Now I can center the seats where ever they need to be and bolt the new Honda seat slider to the flat bar. This way the new seats bolted right up in the stock mounting holes.

^^Nice job! Do you have similar head room as the original seats after removing that extra bracket? Or still a little higher than stock?

Thanks! The driver side is just a little higher than stock, passenger side is normal. I think the reason for this is that the driverside has the lift mechanism that allows you to raise and lower the seat height, and the passenger side doesnt. It's not that noticeable, and the seats are so much more comfortable than the old ones that it was worth the trade off.

I'm also curious about the width of the rear seats, are they wider or shorter than original?
Ha, ha...you beat me to it, lol. I almost have this thread caught up to it's current status, and that's my next update. Let's just say that the durango seat isn't a direct bolt in like I'd hoped. I'm still in the middle of the install, but I will update this shortly with the progress I've made so far and post up some pics as well.

Looks like an involved project. Are those angle gauges stock? Also what is the left gauge for? I could not tell from the picture.
Looking forward to seeing the progress.

Yeah, the inclinometer is stock, I believe it's an SR5 option, my 86' 4runner deluxe model didn't have the gauges. The chrome gauge on the bottom left is an aftermarket temperature gauge that the po installed. I like being able to tell the exact temperature, instead of the hot/cold gauge, but I will probably replace this gauge eventually, I don't like it's current location, it blocks the dash gauge dimmer switch. I would like to get a pillar pod and get some Glow Shift gauges, I had them in my 86' and really liked them, plus they have 7 different color illumination to choose from.

Dodge durango rear seat install

I'm also curious about the width of the rear seats, are they wider or shorter than original?

http://

The durango rear seat is a tight fit between the side panels, it measures approximately 52" wide. It's a double split bench design. Basically the small middle seat is stationary, the middle seat back folds down into a armrest with cupholder, and the two seats on each side have a fold down seat back and then they flip and tumble forward (on the durango this allowed passengers access to the third row seat).

The problem with this seat is that all 3 sections are connected by a peice of round tubing that makes up the frame work. Off of the tube are the hinges and floor mounting brackets. This whole setup is designed to bolt to a flat floor. The thing I overlooked was that the 4runner floor is contoured so that the bottom seat cushions fits down into. When the durango rear seat in its stock form is set in there it sits up way to high (for an adult) and reclined back way to far. I only paid $85 for the seat, but I'm pretty committed to making it work.

After alot of thought, I ended up striping both seats down to the bare frames to compare the two. The dimensions were similar, the 4runner frames are obviously wider since there is just split once down the middle. So what I came up with was to modify/narrow up the 4runner seat frames so that the durango seat foam and cushions could be put on them. This way the seat back latches and the seat bottom hinges are all in the factory locations.

OK, enough over explaining, on to some pics!

^^^I cut the tube frame
and seperately the seats into 3 sections to make it easier to work with.

^^^cut the 4runner seat back frame and narrowed it 4-3/4"

Side by side comparison after welding the modified 4Runner frame back together. (Note, the hinge is in the stock location, I ended up cutting it off and moving g it over 4-3/4" as well, I decided it would interfere with the mounting of the center seat selection). Also it's hard to tell, but I removed this bracket that holds the durango headrest in place and welded it to the 4runner frame.

^^^a pic of the hinge moved over 4-3/4"...I added a 1/4" spacer under it to bring g it back out because of the contour in the floor under the hinge, I was able to use an existing threaded bolt hole in the floor that's for the center seatbelt to bolt the hinge down.

^^^latch mounted
