28 hours for labor? LOL! More like 14 book and can be done in around 6. An electrode completely trashing an engine and making bottom end noise... possible but I think it needs more diag. It's not even an interference engine. Not a big enough chunck to bend a valve either, you said it still runs fine. Sure the noise isn't the debris floating around from cylinder to cylinder? Wish I could hear it run, then I could help more.

Did you try a new plug in it? What if your mechanic is wrong and the engine is OK?
I don't see how an electrode coming off can trash the motor.
 
It may not be trashed, but that big bit of metal being kicked around in the engine is not good for it. It will require at least a breakdown and rebuild to really determine what damage has been done. When my engine lost s main bearing, a small bit of metal sheared off and it is what toasted my engine.

So. Yea. A piece of errant metal is not good.


I would say replace engine, but that is just me.
 
I'd think an electrode would blow out the exhaust port and lodge against the upstream cat. I don't see how it destroys the bearings in the bottom.
 
yeah do the swap yourself i was going to swap engines in my taco i had after i swaped transmissions but didnt but it didnt look to hard. Worse comes to worse do all u can with the swap and then take it to the shop to finsh up. I did this on my 22re motor that was in my 89 yota i did all the work then took it to the shop on the minor things i missed ended up costing me $250 for the motor i bought and $75 bucks for the shop to finsh up.

I'm guessing the electrode is stuck in the head or piston if its tapping on a regular basis, but its hard to understand why they could find it on the scope.

If a bearing is actually bad you can pull the plugs out and spin the engine until the piston is just starting to travel downward. Press down on the piston through the plug hole with a long 1/4" drive extension or similar. If the bearing is trashed you will feel/hear the bearing slop.
 
I think he doesn't want to take the engine apart, cause he wants to sell the truck to carmax or whatever. Take a youtube vid of the sound I'm very curious to hear it as is the rest of the forum. I did an engine swap a few years ago on a prelude. And it was my first time. Did it solo over a weekend, probably 10 hours or so labor. You CAN DO IT!!!! But before the swap, take her apart man. Shes your Rig, and now she needs you <3.
 
Thanks clownmeat for letting me know what the true book hrs are. I hope someone near me is willing to offer me 6hrs to do the job. I did find an engine last night for $700, minus the accessories. This is the part that concerns me.
