I did it tonight. Never been before and had a hair up my ass and wanted to drive so off I went, lol. I managed to find my way around. Nice view from up top. A nice run other than the jack A## kid that might have been 17 in a new raptor that was all done up just flat out flying up that road with his girl next to him. I want to do it again.

Hit me up any time for that one. I started off the 74 and went that way.

There are 3 way up or down so I'm game to go whichever way someone wants. I think I'm free next Saturday. The evening is alwaysy favorite

There were a bunch of fallen trees and mudslides up there (pics posted to a MTB forum I lurk on). The forest service might have cleared them by now but I wouldn't expect them to reopen so quickly after all that weather. BTW, a mountain biker died up near Santiago Peak this weekend. They suspect it was due to hypothermia.

Saturday more than two hours after he was supposed to have come home to say that he didn't know where he was and that, although he was headed down the mountain, he didn't think he could make it. His speech was slow, and he had difficulty answering questions. He said he had fallen.

It sucks to hear about that biker dying. The article doesn't say he directly died of exposure, although that is a a real possibility, but he could have also died from hitting his head on a rock. It sounds like he had a major concussion, possibly brain damage from his fall.

I barely bike but I'd think going on your own on a remote trail is dangerous any day of the year.

Major tragedy though.

I've ridden my MTB on the trails in that area more than I've driven them in my 4Runner (I even did the Counting Coup race a few years back). Any ride in that area is physically tough. It was his mistake to willingly ride there alone, on a day with really lousy weather, without adequate clothing layers, food or water. Weather conditions above 4,000ft in the Santa Ana mountains can be dramatically different (ie worse) than they are down in Corona or OC, and that's on a day with "good" weather. Cellphone reception is spotty even if you're standing on the top right by all the antennas.

Any time I head up there in my truck I always bring lots of extra bottled water and some Clif Bars, enough to hold me over in case I get stuck and I need to wait for someone to come by.
