Satoshi Grill Mod - 5th Gen

Anyone have a good place to get the TOYOTA emblem? ToyotaPartSales.com sez they are discontinued and cannot get them.
 
What a pain it is to get this section out. Grillcraft has instructions but they totally skipped a few steps.

I got the parts in today and made an attempt to get it out. I got everything off except the actual removal from the lower bumper. I know someone said there were clips by the headlights, but man I cannot figure it out for the life of me.

Put everything back together and that's it for me today.
 
I had the same issue when doing my driving lights.

The two clips on each side closest to the headlights are very hard to release. I think I spent almost an hour on those clips alone. I ended up kinda pushing the bumper with my hip and trying to release the clips, eventually they came free and the rest of the bumper basically fell off.

I saw those Grillcraft instructions and the hard parts they left out.:spider: They were probably cussing like a sailor then instead of shooting pics! I tried it like that one time and those clips are a b*tch to see and get to when the bumper cover is on.

This is just my opinion from doing it a bunch of times.....I personally think it's easier to take the whole front bumper cover off as one piece and then separate the upper grill.I've had mine off 5-6 times already and can take it off in less then 10 minutes with an air ratchet. You have to watch though on how tight you put the screws/bolts in when you put this back together as the nuts are plastic and strip real easy. I put them back in by hand with a 1/4 inch ratchet and I think they are all 10 mm heads.

Take all the bolts/clips out per the oem repair manual drawings and unplug fog/turn signal lights .

Pull outward near the wheel wells where it shows 3 each bolts and 3 clips to release it from the inner fender liner and fender.It's sort of sandwiched in between the liner. Pay attention here to how it fits together so when you put it back on! There is also a 1/8" thick piece of double sided foam holding it at the corner of the headlight.

Then grab underneath in the middle and pull forward and up to release those clips in front of the headlights sort of like it's hinged upward . You'll should feel them release, then it should come off forward.

Then when the whole front bumper cover assembly is off you can see and get to the clips that hold the upper grill to the bumper cover.

same here, it was a pain to get the stock grill off. just keep pushing/pulling on those clips by the headlights. once you get one released the rest comes off easy. and snaps back in like nothing.

Agreed. I know this sounds bad, but just pull on it til the bumper starts flexing, o and wear gloves. I had my finger in by one of the tabs, and when I pulled it off, the tabs cut my finger real bad.

By chance do you have the OE Trail insert (in black) that you cut out, or did you use and SR5 grill? I have an SR5 w/ chrome and want to swap for black.
 
What a PITA it is to get off that grill! Anyway, the Satoshi Grill is officially finished and I'll be sure to post some pictures tomorrow! :bigok:

Sorry, I just have 2 spare SR5 grilles. Why don't you just take it off and spray if flat black? Probably save you some money.

Yes it is the same grill as they used (and not the GrillCraft). Takes some time to cut it down and get it just right, but the time spent was def worth it. :D

Ya, you never know how many rock and sand nicks you get on the front til you paint something black over chrome!

On a side note or idea , I read on other forums that either paint stripper or some used easy off oven cleaner on chrome painted plastic to remove it clean.Under the chrome paint is plain black plastic just like the TE ones. It would have to be done before any sanding ,like I already did on mine or else the black plastic would be all scratched up.

Might be worth a shot to try when someone has a chromed piece that is junk anyways from the Satoshi mod. Heck , we might be able to strip the paint from all the chromed parts instead of painting! It's just black ABS plastic under the paint.

We have some industrial stripper here at work in 55 gallon drums that doesn't harm the fiberglass parts underneath and so probably wouldn't harm abs plastic.Just dab it on and 5 minutes later the paint peals off.
