Bought a 2007 SR5 a couple weeks ago. Started tackling some of the more involved tasks on it today. Cleaned up the trailer hitch and skid plate. Hit them with a wire brush and then the POR-15 3 step with black. Top coated them with 3M undercoat. First time I have used either products. Glad I read up on POR-15 preparation, surface prep is everything. Hopefully this will hold up a couple years to Minnesota winters. Sorry I don't have a finished product pic of the hitch with the 3M undercoat yet.

I did the same to my skid and undercarriage and the hitch!

Did you use the spray or the canned kind?

Here is a pic of the skid plate after the first pass with the wire brush, degreaser and a rinse. Hit it some more with the brush after this. The second pic here is what it looked like with just POR-15.

The hitch looked like so many on the road in MN that I didn't even bother with a before pic.

I used the can POR-15 and the marine clean and prep. The steel wasn't pitted bad, mostly surface rust and paint bubbling. If I was working with a more uneven surface than I would have gone spray. I followed the directions closely and read many forums of success and failure. The sponge brush worked good for application. It became obvious to me that POR-15 needs a rough surface to adhere too after reading so I made sure to there was no surface that was greasy or glossy.

Now that I have built confidence in myself with this product I could see using it again if it holds up as well as people claim.

Oh and before someone else picks up on it. That overspray on the bumper skirt by the hitch, that was there beforehand and it's undercoat overspray from whoever had the vehicle before me. I managed to clean it off with 3M scratch remover and elbow grease. When I did my work everything was taped and covered good.
