Do you wheel your 4Runner?

Like REALLY wheel it? Is there a chance that you'll be up to your doors in water/ mud?

There is a breather hole on the shift actuator motor thats attached to the Transfer Case.
The rubber hose that seals that hole can and will dry up and fall off. The other end of the hose goes to the transfer case... not sure what the connection is but I digress.

Make sure that hose is connected! If water or muck gets into the motor it will kill it. And its $700-900 for the motor itself. If you have a dealer do this replacement it'll be close to 2k.
It took my buddy and I about 8 hours to drop the case, replace the motor and put it all back together.

I'll try to get some good photos of where to look on the truck etc.

Ohhh man, I will definitely be checking that!!! My group learned a hard lesson when one of our guys went in deep and his tranny sucked up a ton of water... he thought/assumed the breather was up on the firewall in the engine bay, but it wasn't...

Yeah, there a "T" on top of the trans/transfer case with lines to both. It is held down with one of those filter things like your diff. has. It is on the topside of the trans/Bell housing area. Come to think of it, there should be 2 hose setups in them areas. I extended 2 lines years ago from a search for this problem.

I think I have the info in my build thread or posted it on a thread.

That sucks! I would recommend using a hose clamp instead of a zip tie though, might last a little longer.

Its independent of the T thing breather connection you mention. You do have to reconnect another hose from the T-case to that T fitting, and it goes somewhere... so yeah it would be good to know where the breather ends up so I can be sure its up high enough.

I figure if the factory just had the hose press fitted onto the nipple, that a zip tie would be 5x more effective.

I almost lost my first runner to this, found a hole in the water crossing my front end fell into and couldn't get out on my own. Dash lit up flashing like a Christmas tree and took in water in the cab.
Found these breathers when I bought this one and fixed that problem.

Edit... Forget the zip ties, hose clamps. Was a pain to do, but worth it.

This is the T that you where suppost to have on the actuator and the transfer case. Off of the tee had a 3" hose with one of them breathers on it.

On the othere picture on the mod section, you can see where a hose is on the trans/bell housing hose holder, it is 4-6" towards the rear and has a 6-8" hose on it with a breather, connected to the transmission.

Hope this helps. Just make longer ones going to the top of the motor and should be good.

You are correct, the hose on the "T" fit pretty snug. The trans line and tube, I did get a clamp on it as it was a larger vent.

So am I getting this right...there are two in there we need to extend. The one that swapmet sucked water into the tcase (one with screwdriver is pointing to) and the "T" fitting one?
I assume the fix is the same idea as the "rear diff mod"...extending hose up above with valve on the end of it.
