Saw a 5th Gen on the road (i like my 4th gen better)

So i'm the type of guy who typically gives the benefit of the doubt on the newer model. It should be better right? and in this case it probably is. But i have to say....passing one on the road the other day.......i really didn't care for the exterior.

I like it in pictures, but truthfully in person it looked too boxey and FJish. I can honestly say i don't like the styling of the new 4runner.

Is it a better overall truck? maybe.

But which one is a better looking truck? Def the 4th Gen. No question.

I agree...4th Generation is freaking hot. V6/V8 option, 4HI locked/unlocked, 4Lo locked/unlocked.

Crawl Control is kool...but I need my manually settings. What if you are too use to Crawl Control, GPS, etc...but what if one day it goes out, you don't know what to do. I need manual settings.

My same feeling on p&s cameras...gotta have manual settings.
 
I agree that the 5th Gen is a little too boxy. The finder flares are huge. I wish they didn't have the tail lights poking out either.

The interior looked really nice though.

I agree,it's too boxy for me as well (Wife concurs).

There will always be haters and lovers. Lets just agree we have our own opinions. Looking at the 5th Gen Threads, they are definitely proud and rightly should be.

The first couple of years of the 4th were bad as well, with the two tone fender plastic flares, etc. Give it a few years and I'm sure they will refine the interior and exterior.
 
And how do you think all the 3rd gen guys felt when the 4th gen debuted with at the time was a very soccer mom ready appearance and so much less trucklike and was a bit soft for my taste but over time I've grown to appreciate the 4th gens and really like them.

I admit the 5th gen looks very different but I've been around long enough I know "new" is going to take a little time to get used to and after a year or two the 5th gen will be the norm. Even FJs don't seem so edgy as much as they did a few years ago.

I like the 5th gen TE but the Limited doesn't fit the new look so well IMO.
 
Obviously there is a bit of biasedness among 4th gen owners which is normal but really the 5th gen is a very solid Toyota truck.
 
In a few regards, the 5th is better. Most of them are typical progressions of a new generation and a couple are new touches, but not enough for me to pick a 5th over a 4th.

If I were to buy another 4Runner, I would look for used 4th.
 
The interior of the 5th gen is better than the 4th. I really like how the 4wd controlls are overhead.

Overall I like the 4th gen exterior better, but I do thing the nose of the 5th gen is sweet. Our nose looks a little weak sometimes when you compare it with the sharp lines and huge grills of all the new trucks.

Yes this is 4th gen thread and I'm a 4th gen owner but I'm not going to lie.... if somone was going to trade me a similarly equiped 5th gen for my 4th gen.... I'd take it without looking back, even if I do think my truck looks better.
 
When viewed from the outside, I actually like the 3rd generation best. But I like the interior of the 4th gen and that's what we're shopping for now. I very much dislike the exterior of the 5th gen.
 
i like that it's bigger and newer and has everything upgraded. it's better. period.

save for the lack of a v8.

i don't want another midsize suv. next time around i'm getting a full size.
 
i remember when the 4th gens came out. i hated them. i couldn't understand wtf Toyota had done to the T4R. 6 years later I bought an 03. i love it. right now, i really don't like the 5th gen. but i'll reserve judgement for now. ask me in 6 years.

as for right now, it's too big, no V8 option, those tail lights are asking to be beaten off. but i'll prolly be driving one in 2016!:fro:
 
The 4th-gen is nothing special in looks, I much prefer the older 4Rs, but I only look at mechanicals when I buy. I'm sure the 5th-gen is an improvement mechanically in a lot of ways, but they definitely cheapened up on some things as well, so I'm not sure yet.
 
My first view of the 2010 T4R was at my local Toyota dealership - they had a Pearl colored Limited (although there was no badging on it). I parked beside it and did the comparison look around ... and all I could think of was huge! Bigger everything than my '03. Very impressive.

That one has since sold, and they now have a Black one in stock.

I can imagine that the 3rd generation owners felt the same way (as us 4th generation owners feel now) when the '03 came out.

But I have no urge to trade up for the newer model ... at the moment!
 
I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The looks of the 5th Generation are not nearly as important to me as how well it performs what I need it to do.
For me all the "Do Dads" and "Neat Features" don't mean diddly squat if the vehicle cannot do what I need it to do.
The looks of the 5th gen can and probably will grow on me over time.
Unfortunately, the failure to fulfill my needs is something that cannot be "lived" with or "overlooked" in my case.
Maybe Toyota will address my needs in future model years of the 5th gen and maybe not.
That ultimately will determine who will sell me the next vehicle to fulfill the needs that my current 4Runner fills.
