Just came across the following product that hooks up to your OBDII connector and gives you some readings like MPG, Coolant Temp, RPM, MPH etc.

It looks like it simply plugs into your OBDII sensor (located in the lower left hand kick panel on 2004 4Runners (probably on all 4th gens, but I'll say 2004 as thats what I have and I know for sure). Its powered by the ODBII port so no other power source needed.

The dimensions of the ScanGauge are 5.2" wide by 2.7" high by 2.1" deep. The cord from the diagnostic connector to the control/display is 8' long and about 0.2" in diameter. The following photos give a better idea of what it looks like and how it can be mounted.

Let me know your thoughts on this or if you've found similar products. Heck, maybe even someone on here has used it... Oh yea, I'm in no way affiliated with them, just thought it was something nifty. Maybe if there is interest, we can set up a group buy and get them cheaper...

I have seen this OBD II Diag Tool . You can download the free software and hook it up to a laptop and save/graph the data. There is a demonstraion mode you can try without having the hardware too.

The page does mentions possibly needing a "CAN" interface for 2005 4Runners. I haven't investigated further yet to see whether this is true or if there is an easy adapter for it. Anybody tried it?

To be honest with you guys I am not usually into this type of stuff but that looks like a nice unit. I like knowing the specifics of whats going on. Anyone have it?

I really want an OBD interface for my Laptop. It can record so much info. I would also like a baseline on some things, before I put too many miles on her. The Scan Gage would not do it for me. I want to see much more info and I want graphs. That thing would annoy me.

If you want data recording, PC interface, graphs, more parameters (but not an onboard display) you might look at the products under the "CarChip" name. Just Google CarChip. They're made by Davis Instruments.

A friend has 3 and has been very happy with them. They can also read and reset DTCs.

BTW, he bought them at provantage.com.

You guys beat me to this post . . .

There's a 4R guy over on the RV.net forum who installed one last week. I PMed him to ask if he will communicates some info on octane use. He stated that this is one of the primary things he's looking to find out - that is how the engine reacts to various octanes (timing, MPG, power load, etc.).

Been meaning to post a picture showing how the Scan Gauge can color match the Toyota display





I used the supplied Velcro tape to mount it right on the column where it is easily watched without being a distraction.

I know the ScanGauge is quite capable.

No but I could trace the O2 sensors and hall-effect outputs of the cam and crank sensors.
