Scion Nav swap to 08 with JBL...Advice needed

Hi Fellow 4runners,

Love this forum and all the help and resources people have taken the time to post. Well, I have a huge questions and I’m hoping that someone can point me in the right direction for a head unit swap.

A couple of days ago, my JBL navigation unit in my 2008 Limited went out. The Nav disc got jammed when I accidently hit the eject button for that instead of the CD. I restarted the vehicle and the Nav DVD popped out. Tried to put it in, but it would cycle and then pop out.

So, first, just the navigation didn’t work. The radio, Bluetooth, CD changer, aux input, backup camera, all still worked. So, I searched the forum here and the possible remedy to get the unit to reset was to disconnect the battery for five minutes. Did that. I went from no navigation to no nothing. All I got was “NO DVD INSTALLED. PLEASE INSTALL DVD.” The Nav DVD would go in, but it kept kicking it out. So I bought an update DVD. Same thing. So I got nothing working right now and that annoying message on the screen just taunting me like that little ******* from grade school. I’m hoping that you guys can help me give this annoying little brat an ass kicking and help me remedy this situation.

I bought a Scion PT546-00140 with the Bespoke module attached. My hope is to get this working, if possible. The bonus is hopefully Bluetooth iPhone connectivity instead of the aux input. However, bottom line; I need a working head unit. Will this work and what do I need to make it happen?

From my research, it looks like I might need some combo of the following parts:
• 28 pin harness- PT546-00120-CH
• Antenna Adapter- PT546-00120-AD
• and if you want Bluetooth PT546-74120-MC
• and USB- PT546-00120-US

Is that it, or do I need additional parts because I have the amp. I would like to use the existing GPS antennae, retain the steering wheel controls, use the existing backup camera and microphone, and have Bluetooth connectivity. The aux input would be cool as a back up to the Bluetooth.

I saw a post where the person used a couple of additional items.
- Metra TYTO-01- Converts the analog output of the head unit to the digital signals the Synthesis amp is looking for.
- 71-1761- Reverse Wiring Harness- Allows you to plug the converter into the Scion head unit without hacking up any vehicle wiring.
- Line Output Converter (LOC) from Metra

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to provide as much detail as possible.

Unfortunately, no one answered back, so I will use this to document the install of the Nav unit on this thread. My plan is to post pictures in detail so anyone else can do the same with ease. Hopefully it works out. Either that or Best Buy charges $99 to install and then its done. I would rather do it myself to have the experience.

Anyway, stand by for updates.

You will need the TYTO. The scion HU should work fine with your steering wheel controls (i.e. You don't need any parts like other aftermarket HU do).

FYI... I have a 2008 with factory navigation and a 2005 with the scion nav with bespoke. I think the scion hu sounds better when it engages HD radio, which was my favorite part. When you get out of the city and lose the HD, the factory nav sounds better.

Thanks for the response. Hopefully, going to install this weekend. Should have the two Toyota harnesses by then. Did you max out all the levels on your factory radio before removing it from your 05 like some have suggested?

I reinstalled mine a bunch of times before getting it right. I also went through 3 TYTOs. First one I think was defective from the start. Got the new one, had some experience from the first and got it to work. I was never completely satisfied. I think I turned up the volume too much before disconnecting the OEM HU, and I didn't use the gain on the TYTO. Well... that TYTO eventually started to fail after 8 months. Installed the third and think I got it perfect this time. Sounds awesome. Also, TYTO has a 1 year warranty.

As I mentioned earlier, I installed the scion HU in my 2005 which was non-nav but had JBL amp. Don't turn it all the way up; only 3/4. I also had better success leaving the "surround" feature on before disconnecting the OEM HU. Not sure if the OEM nav HU has that option; haven't looked on my 2008. Lastly, use the gain on the TYTO and turn it up slightly from whatever setting it came on.

My head unit took a dump before I was able to boost the levels so I am not sure how the sound will come out when I do get this all put together. I am hoping for the best, but preparing to suck it up and go with a whole new system. What a bummer.

Either that, or just replace the head unit with an OEM one if I can find one on Ebay. What a PITA.

Still waiting on some harnesses from my buddy at Toyota. Looks like i will try and make this work next weekend. Have the TYTO. Gonna try an document what I did for future people who attempt this mod.

Still don't understand why I cant use the existing bluetooth mic and have to put in a new on. Wonder if I can pop the leads out of the existing harness and buy a blank connector like the one on the wiring harness they say you need. Makes sense to a know-nothing like me. wonder if it is possible???

One is definitely the GPS antenna. The other is listed as USB. I know that means there are two USB and I can't remember which one I actually used. The attached helped me a little, in case you don't already have it.

thanks man. I appreciate it. Should have all the connectors tomorrow, so I will do the install in the next couple of days. Keeping fingers crossed for two things:
1. Existing bluetooth mic works and I wont need that part.
2. The levels in the amp will not be a problem

Bit of a snag... After matching everything up with what I have, it appears I have three unused connectors still in the dash. I assume one is the GPS antennae and one is the back up camera, but none of the connectors seem to match the back of the scion head unit.

Did you find the appropriate connectors somewhere? I have been looking, but cant seem to find anything. I am about to give up and list this whole unit for sale and just go with an aftermarket pioneer system. This is getting very frustrating.

seems like everyone made this work with no problems. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Looks like I have found a solution. I ended up busting open the oem head unit and removing the connectors. My goal was to try and find the part numbers and buy new connectors, but struck out.

So, I think I am gonna build a "franken-harness" using the connectors I cannabalized. I could always splice the existing wires, but this allows me to avoid that.

I also had to get another oem JBL unit to ensure the levels on the amp were turned all the way up. Found an Evil Prius headunit on ebay for $30 to get those levels dialed in before I install the new FRS unit.

When, and if, I get this whole dela working, Ill post the parts, diagrams and process I used.

Glad your getting it figured out. I had help from some guys on here also. I still have the volume issue that has a mind of it's own. I think some were saying there is a module that will take care of that now. I have had 3 TYTO modules replaced to try and fix the issue. Metra seems to not care about it and keeps telling me its a install issue. But all in all I love the setup. Just having bluetooth is worth the hassle.

Success!!!

Installed the unit today. Went pretty well and managed to stuff all the cabling behind.

Everything works and the nav antenna connection matched up.

Two issues:
1. Navigation is off by a couple hundred yards. I think I saw a fix for that on here
2. No illumination of buttons. No spare wires so I must have missed something.

Otherwise, works great. The Aha in hte Bespoke doesnt want to load up, but I dont really care. Got it to work with the factory rear camera and installed a USB connection in the center console.

Overall, a nice upgrade to the previous system.
