Search out in Nevada and AZ as well, saw a few 5 speed 4x4's with 150k ish miles for $5-6k.
 
I had a 2005 TC, bought the day they came out. I had it for 5 years. It was fast enough for me in the beginning and then I added headers, exhaust, high flow cat, CAI, springs, wheels spacers, torque dampener, unichip, etc. and it became really fun to drive. But I'm not too fond of the overall quality. Of course then the car was only $16500, so the quality is a little expected. Not sure about the 2nd gen TCs but my complaints and the complaints of many over at scionlife were the roof rattled like crazy, the hatch rattled worse, road noise sucked, the seats were uncomfortable after a long drive, and getting the manual in reverse was a pain sometimes.

Overall I liked the car as it was my first new car and I waited a very long time for it to be released. I miss driving it and have no regrets owing one, but as I've gotten different vehicles over the years I've come to find some of the rattles and noises are a big concern for me when buying a car.

I've owned both and can tell you it does not matter which one you get, it's a pretty stupid to pass up a good one because some sunglasses and drinks, especially when you can get the parts easily to resolve the issue.

Very true, im considering getting a 98'. thanks for persuading me! do 96-98 have rolldown rear window?

Every 96-02 4Runner had a rolldown rear window. If a 96-98 is cheaper, just remember all the money you could put towards mods compared to paying more for a 99-00. And the only real differences between 98 vs 96-97 was the steering wheel, and 2 HVAC levers were replaced with knobs.

I am highly considering this 98' now. Although the clear lenses i have wont fit that bumper :( and im not sure about my clear corners either. BUT, i do have 00-02 taillights, which have a much cleaner look then the ones on there now.
Just gotta finish prepping mine for selling.
Would any locals be willing to come with me, or meet me somewhere to come check out that 98 this weekend? i would GREATLY appreciate that and would treat you to lunch or something ;) I know the basic things to look for when buying a car, but when it comes to an manual. and 4wd, i dont know the stuff to look for.

When testing 4wd engage it, make sure you feel it get heavy, it wont hurt it (dont be stupid about it though, once you feel it, you can disengage it).

The clear corners will fit, but they are the clear ones as opposed to the frosted ones of earlier.

5 speed, i assume you know how to drive stick, if it feels anything but smooth other than driver error there is likely an issue, if it pops out of gear, if it doesnt go into gear easily, if you floor it in any gear the RPM's go up but the speed does not, check 4th and 5th gears specifically for that, if that happens it means the clutch is slipping and is on its way out.

If they have no proof the clutch was changed which it could have been or not, depending on how good the PO's were at driving, then try to nail them on the price about it, my 99's clutch was completley shot, and it was a really good bargaining point, $170 and 5 hours later i had a truck without a slipping clutch. (it will take you longer to change, i had an awesome setup to change it with)

Ive never driven a stick... but honestly i know how to and ive seen my friends drive them. Only thing i have toget use to isthe timing... hahahaha

Well, if your father can drive stick and is mechanically inclined i would have him go with you (or uncle), or if i were you i would get a friend that is mechanically inclined and can drive stick well to go with you, or get a local member to come like maybe PM maybe COB or driffter33 or another well known local member and offer them a reasonable amount of money to look at it with you, just a thought.

He can't be that much worse then the general public, some of the people that test drove my 97 were horrible, and they said they knew how to drive stick. Even kids i know who have stick cars are quite terrible at it.
