SCOOPED HOOD installed...is paint off or am I over reacting??

I bought an oem scooped hood from the dealership and had their body shop paint it. I picked it up yesterday and had it installed and the paint seems to be off a little. Everyone I’ve asked said they can’t tell, but to me it seems off. The shop said to wait until a bright sunny day and see what it looks like. The first photos are on a cloudy day and last 3 photos are on a sunny day. What do you guys think? From a distance it doesn’t look that much off, it’s when you get close. The shop said they would blend the fenders for $200 more. I’m not sure if I should just go to a different paint shop and have it repainted or have the shop blend the fenders, I didn’t want to blend the fenders because if i trade the truck in I will sell the hood and put the stock hood back on. should I just live with it or go to th extreme and just have the whole rig wrapped! Lol jk wraps are pricey but serious how off is the paint and what would you guys do?

Hard to tell too much from the pics but it almost looks like the hood is super white and the rest of the car is blizzard pearl. Looks a shade whiter than yours. If I could tell that from the pics, I'm sure you can tell even more in the real world.

Looks a little off to me, but so does the TRD Pro garnish that was painted white. If you bring it back (which you should), make sure they 100% get the correct paint code. Contact the dealer who recommended you there. They should match the factory color.

It does look different, but it could be because the rest of your truck paint is more worn/faded. Could either buff up the rest of your truck to see if it matches, or wait until the newly painted hood gets worn/faded. Probably would have been better if they had the truck there when painting the hood

I probably should have mentioned that The trd garnish is wrapped in gloss white vinyl so that is going to be off no matter what. The shop took down the vin so they should have the correct paint code

Probably would have been better if they had the truck there when painting the hood

It's probably this. Since your hood is newly painted it won't match 100% with the rest of the truck because of fading (sun).

Yup. 100% this^^^ I had a 2013 Tundra that was Super White. Came stock with chrome bumpers and grill. 4 years later, I painted them with the same paint code and everything, and they were still kind of off.. due to the age of the body paint on the truck. Nothing noticeable.. just like yours. 99% of people wont even think to look for whatever you're noticing. I wouldn't worry about it. Be too hard to blend, without painting other panels, which you said you didn't want to do.

Definitely, especially Toyota's Super White 070 paint. Apparently the Super White doesn't have a separate clear coat. My wife's 2014 Camry is the same color, and when I wipe it down, I'll sometimes notice my absorber will have a little white tint to it as if some of the paint is coming off. Ever noticed some white Toyotas eventually look chalky when not regularly taken care of?

The paint code for the 2016 4runner super white ll is 040.... that’s the code they said they used.

it could also be old wax on your truck. Wipe the fenders down with a wax removing cleaner and then rewash the truck.

last year I also added color matched body moldings and those don’t seem to be as off as the hood paint

You can't match the paint exactly no matter what you do. Toyota can't match it in its own factory either. That's why they paint entire body assembly sets together at once. Doors, hoods, etc. are all painted together at once in a single shot so they all match.

But... you can probably get closer than what it looks like in the pictures.

Also FWIW superwhite is a single stage paint. I can almost guarantee that your shop painted in a base/clear two stage process. Even Toyota Factory Authorized shops repair with two stage because they can't spray the same superwhite mix that Toyota uses at the factory. Two stage is probably better. It's just not the same.

As a comparison - below is a picture of a factory superwhite bumper I bought from someone locally to replace my 2nd bumper - the original was damaged when I got hit in a Home Depot parking lot. So the bumper on the 4runner is an aftermarket painted bumper (by a toyota factory certified shop). I bought the spare bumper so I can hack up my current one and/or scratch it up guilt free. IMO the repaint actually matches the paint on my 4runner a bit better than the factory paint from a different vehicle.

It will never match perfectly. Body shops do what they call "feather out" meaning they will paint into fenders fading out into original color. It is more expansive and if your fenders have being waxed before - requires some serious prep to prevent new paint from flaking off. I am against this age proven technique and prefer closest match possible only on replaced panel. I've done my silver 2004 that way and can't spot much difference between original (faded) panel and matched new one. Keep in mind that using original color code may give you bad result. I'd suggest using paint match instead. Good painter will match current (faded) color instead of just applying color from the book.

Im going to give it a good buff tonight with my orbital polisher and rubbing compound and see if it turns out. If that doesn’t help I’ll try to live with it for a couple weeks and see if I get over it. If it bugs me too much and might not bug someone else there will be a scooped super white hood for sale in the Seattle area soon lol

The painter did have me come down Thursday so he could compare a swatch that he painted to the hood and to me and him it looked pretty damn close. So he painted it Friday and let it sit over the weekend.
