Search & Rescue rigs

it, in and of itself isnt worth the drive from portland imo, but if you are already up in the area or just supper bored then sure. for me, my inlaws live around that area. and i go out to yakistan to YTC for range days every now and again, so its not that far out of my way...

i think someone got a new SAR rig... i saw this sweet pic of a yellow 1980 toyota pickup on facebook this morning... has a winch and brush bar! good snag 92-SR5!

also i emailed that guy, but still have not gotten a response, maybe have him check his junk mail, it might have ended up in there

Thanks!
He is super busy so he might not have got around to checking it. If I see him I will talk to him again.

well the other night we had a search up on/at dog mountain in the gorge... my runner was getting blown all over the road by the winds on my way out there. it was kinda scary knowing that your in a 5K lb rig and the winds are blowing it around like a leaf... i hit head winds that were causing my rig to kick down into 2nd gear, and i could only manage to hit 70mph once the entire hour drive. once i got there i was told that the coast guard was sending up a helicopter to try and do a pick... they showed up about 15min after me and said no way... with a air temp of below zero and ground temps around 25(3-5* with wind chill) it was gonna be a long night... it was so cold in fact that the condensation from my exhaust was freezing inside the exhaust pipe with the truck running... i got out my new camera and snapped a few pics while waiting for the CG to do their thing...

i was playing around with exposure and settings...

Took advantage of the decent weather the other day. Decided to wash up my runner and snap a few pictures.

Great thread! Those Iceland rigs are cool!

Before I went into the service I ran with EMS in Colorado and we pieced together some beasts. Anyone ever take a spin in a ex military jeep or duece and a quarter? Throw on an extra ton of gear and crawl up the mountain! I dont think we ever changed the tires on those, but I remember chaining them up in the winter. All ten wheels!

...Sorry, I guess that's how I got into wheeling in the first place. Nice rigs guys, and thanks for your service!

It would be fun riding around in one of those. Around the NW, where the kid and I do SAR, they would be way too wide and big. The forests along the cascades can be very dense.

found a twin here in portland...

I love how you chased him all over Portland. Thats hillarious. I am interested in SAR but fear I dont have the tim eto commit to training and actually doing it. What all is involved?

oh giving up sundays and saturdays for trainins, getting called at 2am because someone didnt come home from a hiking/camping trip... its actually not as bad as it sounds. most groups put on trainings like 2wice a month(not required that you attend everyone), but basically it really boils down to a love of the outdoors, some outdoor smarts, medical/first aid training is preferred, but not required, as they will train you in wilderness first aid. basically be i relatively good physical shape/condition. some people would say im in good shape, but im out of shape... my group is one of a few groups in wa that can do evidence searches for crimes(that you have to go through a class and get certified for) um be able to pass a background check.... its really not that hard to do. some months ist super slow with like nothing happening, and some months you get like 3 or 4 call outs, it all depends...

Pretty much what he said. Each group is different in what they specialize in. My group specializes in emergency communications and 4x4s. With my group its required that you have several ICS courses completed, first aid/CPR minimum, ham radio license, the typical background checks, and pass the board interview.
Bottom line, it is a fun way to spend money. haha We are volunteers who drop everything we are doing, spend our own time and money to help a stranger that we will probably never meet.

Donefore: Do you live in the portland area? If so this page has links to a few organizations in the area. Search & Rescue
What I would suggest is to contact some groups and attend one of their meetings, that way you can see what they're all about and what is involved.

Man, my rig has changed since last time I posted in this thread. This is how it is currently sitting. Hoping to get some tires this week.
