Seat belt fix or replace?

My driver side seat belt has started to fray a bit where the buckle rides most of the time. Is there a hack to fix it before it gets worse or is it just a matter of getting a new OEM one when it gets bad enough?

You can get an oem one. Or there is a company out there that rebuilds them with new springs etc

Like Seat Belt Repair Service & Airbag Module Reset - Safety Restore

I am sure there a several other companies out there. As if the passenger side has been discontinued it will not be long before the drivers side is too in the earlier years.. :-(

best to replace it, "fixing" a seatbelt can be extremely unsafe. If you want one on the cheap I'd check a pick n pull but if not i'd go with Jon's site if you want a brand new one.
 
Yes being they are safety devices it's better to replace. Besides I replaced my 2 fronts off my parts mobile and the springs didn't last a week. Don't waste your time with used.. :)

Rules I live by:

1) If it can leave you stranded, get ORIGINAL TOYOTA Parts only (LBJ, Radiator, belts, hoses, gaskets, etc).

1b) If it can't, OEM/Aftermarket is fine (bushings, bulbs, shocks, etc).

2) If it involves safety, like belts, airbags, bolts, etc. Get new (or equiv.) and only original Toyota Parts. I assume Toyota still sells this new?

2001 both fronts are availble MSRP $ 346.90
 
Camelback has the driver front for about $150 but says the "right" side is discontinued. Are they ambidextrous?

The passenger and drvers are mirrors of each other. They are not interchangeable. Hence why they are different part numbers. :)

I have used safty restore now 4x times, it's just like new and they use OEM parts if anything needs to be replaced.

it has been my experience that it's just the webbing that needs to be replaced. I feel 100% safe with the repaired belts. they clean and service the winding part, they work just like new.
 
The problem with using Safetyrestore is I'd have to drive around without a seatbelt until they shipped them back.

Just buy a new one. The parts are so intricate in the lock mechanism that it’s silly. Some models have the explosive squib in them.

There are places that rebuild the retractable and re use your webbing. Seat belt planet does new webbing, but doesn’t do retractables.

I’ve been replacing all of mine. The rears required reusing and washing the webbing since tan is discontinued. All I did was swap out the grey new for my reused tan ones.

The front I just went all new. Yeah it’s spendy. But it’s like 4-5 tanks of gas. I guess my thought is if the seat belts to expensive to fix maybe the car is too expensive to have?

I found 73220-35471-E0

Cost is only $169 from the dealer...

EDIT: F it, ordered a new one and will send mine out for repair when I swap em

If you can still get oem ones that not a bad idea. I need several sets redone.
So being the passenger side is now gone. I just send a set at a time back to the company I suggested. I am glad to see members having positive and good things to say about them.. Thanks for the feedback.. I was hoping we get some of it on this thread. :-)

For what it worth I'm stingy with vouching for a company. If I wanted/needed a new/old stock airbag I'd get it from them.

I just like the fact we have folks use them with positive results. Says alot these days. Companies can change in time as well. So always best to keep our eyes open. :)

They responded to my email to my inquiry with year and color:

Once removed, you need to purchase the following service in our website:

$74.95 Car Seat Belt Repair Service - Fix Pretensioners

Then you simply mail the seat belts to us, we replace the webbing and make your seat belt like new again ready to install."

$18 return shipping added at time of order to total $92.95
