Seat Belt recoil

Anyone worked on a seat belt recoil? Does it need to be replaced or are they able to be rewound / tightened up?

I know it can be tightened, although i don't know how. I think the search term you want to use is "seat belt pretensioner".

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong please.

You can slowly pull one end of the spring coil out from the main seatbelt body and spin one more turn and then put it back in the grove. I did this for a 97 corolla and it worked.

I bookmarked that same article, but I'm not sure that it applies to the pre-tensioners in our 3G trucks. I'm also not sure which years have them, it might be '99+.

In any case, if you work on ANY pre-tensioner, disconnect the battery negative for at least 90 seconds before you start as those have an explosive squib and can ruin your day if it goes off in your hands. Plus you have to replace an expensive part.

I honestly thought you were joking until I referenced the repair manual --> "When removing the seat belt pretensioner, work must be started 90 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ”LOCK” position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery."
