Seat belt strap to fraying and needs replacement.

With over 243,000 miles on my 4Runner, my seat belt strap is fraying and the slide catches where it's frayed. Is the strap replaceable, or do I need to buy the whole seat belt unit? I have a 1996 SR5 with Taupe/Oak interior. Thanks for any help.

You'll need a new seat belt! I need one for my wife's, and for mine, same color!

Oh and one for the Tacoma, and one for the Corolla, may as well get a six-pack while you're there!

yes the seatbelt is replaceable. you don't have to buy the entire package, the belt itself can easily be unrolled and spooled again. but the easiest and probably cheapest would be just going to a junkyard and buying one.
 
I actually found a decent one at a salvage yard from a 98 today (3/6). For less than $15 and 3 bolts, I'm good to go! Thanks for the replies!

If you are getting used/junkyard parts, make sure you get the right one.

The front seat belts changed in '99 to have a pre-tensioner squib in them - so, '96-'98 are compatible and '99-'02 are compatible.

I'd want a good look at the vehicle the used seatbelt comes off of. I'd just buy a new one. I also want to say that after getting a 1998, I think the seatbelt part number is different from 96-97. This isn't to say it wouldn't bolt in and work. But I would double check.
 
I need this

I have at least two vehicles could use a new belt and maybe get the retractor cleaned up since it's a bit slow to return.
 
Do the company(s) who offer the replacement webbing service have DMV approval ratings? I would assume so because it's a huge liability issue but I'd hate to install new belts that aren't DMV approved and then sell the vehicle to an unsuspecting buyer who then gets in an accident and the stitching fails. Could you potentially be liable if you install a product that is not DMV approved?

I know its a remote chance of all that happening, but let's face it off-roading can be dangerous - vehicles and occupants can be exposed to more risk.

I am considering replacing my wife's Sonata webbing because she managed to get it caught in the door and it cut the webbing. Currently not letting her drive it!

I have sent an inquiry to one company about the issue of DMV approval.

These are the folks to use! They can not only replace the belt but check and repair all the tensioners and squibs for only $65!!!Q

In CA the DMV does not "approve" anything. No such thing, and no government agency regulates companies doing these repairs.

Where did you get this information? Any links to this? I never knew DMV can be involve in this kind of repair. Maybe BAR?:noidea:
 
Im going to get new belts from the driver/passenger on my 98. My driver is literally patched together with another piece off of another car cause it doesn't even match the seat belt. Talk about a hazard waiting to happen.

Ok, got that...so to the question - are these companies compliant with ANY and ALL regulations?

Again, I assume so but I have asked the question directly to one large company who do repairs and so far radio silence.

Thanks for the reply. You are right. I found a decent seat belt on a 98 at a salvage yard. The mounting plate with the retractor is larger than the one I took off of my 96. The larger 99 mounting plate has another hole for an additional bolt that lines up with a bolt hole in the pillar frame like it was made for it.
 
Why would you put a 20 year old piece of safety equipment on your truck?
All fabrics deteriorate with age, heat, UV exposure, chemical exposure, mechanical stress. Who knows what that junkyard belt went through before being scrapped.
My 2000 needed a new driver side belt last year because it was frayed. Got an OEM, and my mechanic installed it for me. I forget the exact price, but installed it was under $100 and worth it to me.
 
You can get one for $190 from toyotaepartsstore or whatever its called. I just got mine with some fender liners for about $300. all genuine toyota parts, so you dont have to worry about its safety. Totally worth it IMO.
