Seattle Area Maintenance and Meet

Need some help. I just moved to Seattle about 4 weeks ago. I'm loving this city and I must say it is great to be here with the Seahawks going to the Super Bowl. Anyway, I took my 4runner into Toyota of Seattle yesterday and they found that the drivers front axle seal is leaking a bit. They quoted me $335 for the job. I was wondering if anyone who knows how to change these out could help? I don't feel comfortable doing this myself and I have only street parking where I live and its all hills. Or does anyone know a nice shop that I could take it to? I'm in lower Queen Ann but I have no problems driving to get somewhere. I need to learn my way around anyway.

Is it the seal or is it your CV boot?

I've used and like... "Arrows Automotive" (on 4th S - across from Orient Express). They put in a new radiator+tranny cooler+tranny flush after I had the dreaded Pink Milkshake. The mechanic, Travis, knew what he was doing and he invited me into the shop to watch him work on it.

If its truly the axle seal and not the CV, it should cost ~ 10-15 bucks from the dealer. I can change it in less than an hour. You might need just a tad of gear oil to top off the diff.

Which side is it? I actually have an extra drivers side one, still in the plastic, that I don't have a use for.

It is the drivers side. The dealer said it was the axle seal. They actually took good care of me. I ended up waiting 3.5 hours for the oil change even with an appointment and they picked up the cost. Anyway, when I replaced the ball joints last June I noticed the axle itself was coated in dried grease and road grime. I took a rag and wiped it all down. I have never noticed any fluid leaking from this thing and I'm the kind of person that looks when I walk up to the truck or after parking somewhere. My last car leaked lots of oil so I can't help but always check. I'll be able to get under it in the morning. I would be happy to compensate you if you do the work/show me.
 
Just looked at it and it's definitely a seal leak. Also losing some grease from the inner rubber boot. Should I just do the seal or get a new axle too?
 
I can give a hand under the truck, but I am totally new to this vehicle. Someone else would need to show me what needs to be done.

On another note, I finally picked up a 4Runner and I am eager to hit some trails. I am a NooB, but I learn fast. I am on the Eastside. Who is ready to hit some dirt?

My truck is stock with a 5-speed and diff lock, just to put my capabilities out there.
 
I am willing to offer up my shop as a wrenching point/meet and great. You'd have to come up here to Whidbey Island and it would have to be after I get back from KOH in a couple weeks. Let me know if you guys want to do it sometime.

Is there a time that works well for you? I'm free this Saturday or next weekend. I know this weekend is kind of crazy because of the Seattle Seahawks. I'm thinking of buying a new axle because the boot is leaking a bit of grease as well. Might as well put a new one in while we are in there and save the old one as a trail spare.

Saw a 97-98 Desert Dune Limited getting on 5 in Shoreline today. I cheated and used the carpool lane to get a better look at your truck. Lift, black Tundra split spokes. Clean truck! Makes me wish I found those Tundra wheels I was looking for and makes me miss the rake I used to have!

Hey. Not sure how I missed this! You still looking for some help? The next few weekends are filled for me, but I should have some time once March comes around.
 
I actually took it to No. 1 Japanese auto shop by my place. He fixed it right up and the cost was very reasonable. Would still be cool to get a meet going sometime in the next month or so. I am dying for some off roading
 
Free stock 112k rear springs and end links. Springs are saggy end links show some rust.

Throwing them out this weekend if no takers.
