second battery location

Hey guys, i have spent some time (only about 3 years) looking into and dreaming of running an auxiliary battery. I just received my dual battery kit and am deciding on a final resting place. I have seen all of the setups where they run them side by side where the original battery location is but all of the dual battery trays seems to be custom fitted for an optima or are $200+ .. I noticed a big void in the top left corner (passenger side closest to firewall) where on all my previous runners the abs lines were. It looks like i would just need to relocate the fuse block and i could look at getting a relocating kit for a little cheaper (or have a guy weld a little platform there) and set it up. Here is a pic of the area i'm referring to. Anyone tried this or see any issues? thanks

Why are you looking into a second battery?

Because for me a second battery was a good idea, because where I go offroad at camp we open the trucks doors and blast the stereo, so sometimes the truck dosent start in the morning, but being a 5speed we just park it on a hill and push. but in the morning if there isn't a hill the other trucks just give me a jump.

but other than that if you are just planning on running lights, big stereo, winch get the Biggest AGM battery that you can find, and an High output alternator should do the trick, The battery I just put in my truck is a Motomaster AGM ultra Eliminator (from Canadian tire) but it's made by NORTHSTAR battery co. It is a fabulous battery for the price. also 5 year warranty. ill try to get the model number up in a bit.

look into mean green alternators, mine is 140amp and is working like a charm.

I have a 4cyl so I cant go look, but from the pic that location looks ok. it should be an easy job to weld a little plate for that spot.

I think the concern with that location is heat as the headers are right there. I've seen people with air compressors in that location, but had issues with the compressors shutting off due to high heat coming from the headers. Not sure if that's a concern with the battery. Just something you might want to research.

I run an AGM in the back, I thought of moving it to the exact spot you are talking about since i have no ABS either, but my battery is wayyy too big. So it stayed in the cargo area. I'll be running my Compressors there instead when the time comes.

I have a small AGM battery that fits perfectly there without relocating that fuse block. There is a oval sorta hole where this threaded stud will get a nut on the underside as well as a matching hold down bracket with a threaded hole in the fender itself. There will be a small platform as well to sit the battery flat, purely for aesthetics.

Not trying to get off topic...but why don't y'all have ABS? Is this something y'all decided you didn't want anymore and took out? I was thinking maybe y'all have older 4R's made before ABS...but I believe the OP has an '01?? Maybe not??

What about where the airbox is? You'll have to do something different with the filter, but otherwise big flat spot just like the one on the other side...

I'm running the dual optima box, haven't tried any other battery in there for fit though.

its weird.. i do have ABS. I know that because of a near miss yesterday.

I thought about the airbox area.. it would be almost too perfect i wonder if i could re route the hose and airbox but would it not need to remain where it is in order to get fresh air? IIRC it connects to the fender where it draws the air from.

What about a heat shield for the battery?

I was just looking at this the other day.

I took some measurements and figured I could put two 24f batteries in the stock battery location, by turning the batteries sideways. Just need to build a box and bracket for coolant reservoir.

You'll find photos and stuff in my build thread, I used a Ruffstuff box and Blue Sea ACR, bits of scrap aluminum, bit of scrap steel, military terminals w/covers, negative bus, cheap voltmeter w/switch, bicycle water bottle and bottle cage, Blue Sea fuse block:

I'm pretty sure I've seen others put the second battery where the airbox goes, replacing said box with one of those intake tube/air filter set-ups. You'd have to chase that tail yourself, if you're interested. I also saw a dual battery build that put the batteries under the truck, rather than in the engine bay. Have also seen people put the battery up on that right side fender as was originally mentioned.

Caution on putting your batteries under your 4R if you live where they salt the roads. GM actually sells battery trays to move one of the battery on the frame rail in their HD trucks and vans. I saw one after just two winters...what I fringing mess!!!! Highly suggest against this...I guess unless you live in the SW.

Id love to get something like the ruffstuff dual box but they all look to be customer tailored to optima. I'm hoping to keep my current factory (recently replaced) battery and add a deep cycle. I guess I'll need a custom one ..

I'd say reroute the intake to where you were thinking about putting the battery make a box for it, and just go into the fender there. Boom intake silencer removal mod and a perfect spot for a second full sized battery.?
Just what I would do in your situation.
It also sets you up to do a snorkel if you ever plan to.

I've actually done the intake removal already and just did some quIck measurements.. It doesn't look like the airbox would fit in that area. The box is a little too deep to make it. I guess if I were to make it work I would have to do the deckplate mod since the hole to draw air in would be right next to the headers.

I'd say straight pipe into a box with a cone filter and a straight pipe into the fender. So it pulls air from the fender.:noidea: just a suggestion.
