Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure on V8's! Important!

Also ordering a kit. I've noticed my pump is noticeably loud in the mornings, and this seems to coincide with the noise the GX's made just before it failed.

Can anyone post what to expect to be sure that the installation was a success? I would assume that if the install was a success, we would no longer hear the AIP on first start?

So no CEL and no AIP in the morning = Correctly Installed?

I had a brief "HOOM" sound on both my 4.7's about 5-10 seconds after cold startup.

After installing the slyfox kit on this Runner, no "HOOM" sound on cold startups so I figure it is working correctly. And no CEL's.

Installed this morning. Easy. Hardest part was that it's minus 12c outside. Oh and trying to figure out where to put the ugly grey wire...going to buy some plastic sheathing and add it when it's warmer.

From fusebox to airbox? Yeah, I had some wire loom so I ran it through that and ziptied to the various hoses along the firewall. And re-taped the MAF wire bundle then wire loomed that also.

I'm going to order the Rutech kit that comes with the plates...I just purchased an 05' 4Runner limited with the V8 w/ 74K miles.....I want to avoid this problem since Ohio gets stupid hot in the summer. So I'm getting into doing my "own work" but very green outside of an oil change/pads w/ rotors kind of work....How hard/easy is it to put the metal plates in?
Here in central Ohio we do not do emissions testing so I'm good there...I just don't want to be on a trip or in the middle of summer heat and have something fail..

Does this "sound" only occur right after the vehicle is started? Does it ever occur when the switch is only partially turned on to "ACC" or "ON"?

only on:
cold starts(engine is cold)
ambient air temp over 41F

you will here sound when starting engine not when just acc or on......lasts 10-20 secs

Got mine done...my buddy helped make sure it was done correctly. No codes and the 4R started right up, so I assume all is good. Mine was preemptive and not because something went wrong.

My install also went well. Had Slyfox's and a Rutech kit. Used the Rutech on mine and will install Slyfox's on another 4runner.

Mine was preventative, no CELs yet. The Rutech was plug and play. Very professional looking kit that can be paired with a couple of zip ties to look OEM to the casual observer. Did not need to install the plates as my system hadn't failed yet. Plugging in the module and ziptying it into the existing MAF wire harness took all of 30 seconds.

Sign of success - no AIP shop vac noise on first start.

Another example is the TSB involving "Driveline Thumping/Clunking." The Lexus GX470 had a TSB covering the driveshaft with an extended warranty almost a year or two after the release of the GX470 in '03. Toyota did not release a TSB/extended warranty on the 4Runner until 2012, despite that driveline being the exact same part; when they did release the TSB finally the extended warranty only covered only about '07+ models because they worded a 5yr/50k extended warranty clause into it from the date of the TSB issue (which was sometime in the summer of 2012.) Keep in mind the 4th Gen V8 4Runner was produced from '03-'08; not only did Toyota drag their feet on a TSB/Extended Warranty on the exact same part on the GX470 over five years earlier, when they finally did release the TSB it automatically excluded about half the affected vehicles because they took so long.

Is this the common thump/clunk that occurs when you come to a stop? This drives me crazy and if there's a fix, I'd like to address it? Is there a part number to order??

Thanks

Get good synthetic grease and get all the zerks from front to back on your driveshaft, after 1 or 2 good grease ups it will stop. yes its a common problem and no it has nothing to do with this thread

Received my kit last week, thanks for the speedy turnaround slyfox75 :bigok:. Will probably install today or tomorrow!

In my experience if a vehicle has a common problem, sooner or later your going to run across that same issue. That's almost a fact if your going to keep that vehicle long term.

For a Cheap and easy preventative fix, it makes more sense to do it now than pay more after it breaks. Especially if your 4Runner is 10+years and over 100k just didn't make sense not to.

THIS will be the 1st mod I'll do to the 08 SR5 I just found on Craigslist, if I end up getting it... :pray2:

For those that have 2008 4.7's the slyfox kit works on them. I installed it yesterday, no different than the 2007. Same fusebox, same MAF wiring. I don't have the brief "oomph" sound on a cold startup so that tells me the kit is working correctly.

So the block off plates only need to be installed if your CEL is on?

No. CEL has nothing to do to determine needing blockoff plates or not.
The CEL will come on after the ECU noticed a few repeated issues with the AIP system........could be a lot of reasons for this.
Most people will hear the Shop vac sound a few days before the CEL comes on.

The plates are only needed if you have a valve stuck open code. If this is the case the ECU will also put you in limp mode as a safety. The plates block that exhaust gas from backflowing through stuck open valves.
Plates are not needed if you system is healthy(preventative) or they are stuck closed(indicated by code). In a normal, healthy truck, the valves are closed 99.9% of the time anyway.

Just installed slyfox75 's kit last night. Instructions were very detailed and easy to follow. Installation took about 5-10 minutes of actual work. Kit is was professionally built and packaged.

Air injection pump

Was on this site yesterday and you guys made my day. I called my Toyota dealer and they set me up for a Thursday appointment. The extended warranty is 10 years and 150,000 miles. This is my second one and I will be paid in full for the first one. I can't thank you guys enough.

Your getting the air injection pump replaced under an extended warranty on a 4runner? If that is the case, please post pictures of the paperwork you receive from the dealer.
