Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure on V8's! Important!

Was on this site yesterday and you guys made my day. I called my Toyota dealer and they set me up for a Thursday appointment. The extended warranty is 10 years and 150,000 miles. This is my second one and I will be paid in full for the first one. I can't thank you guys enough.

Sucks for me to own a 06 :frusty:

Installed mine about five months ago and still going strong. No pump noise, no risk of failure and CELs due to hippy device failure.

Whoa whoa wait. So this high pitch whine is nothing serious and can be bypassed with a $50 kit from a local forum member!??

Do the Mod!!! I am on the other side of the world with the Navy, and my Wife has to drop 2,700 to get the truck back on the road. If i was there i would do the full kit and not look back.....

I have a 2008 w/92K mi.

No AIP issues despite buying new in NorCal, moving to MN for five years (with those absurd winters), traveling to WY, CO & UT regularly and then settling back in the SoCal desert the last three years.

Installed SlyFox's kit today- thanks Jeff for the quick shipping and great communication- took about an hour from first beer cracked to pulling back into the garage. Install was entirely preventative and I don't ever plan on selling, so with emissions testing unaffected by this bypass, I'm in it for the long haul.

Easy install folks, and don't let the splicing scare you.

Edit: I have been driving my truck daily since bypass install and have noticed something both interesting and to be expected I guess. I park in my garage and always drive with my rear and driver's window down when it's cool enough and I always put these two windows down after starting but before reversing. Since install, I've noticed a very distinct fuel smell when reversing into my own ehuaust and I have little doubt that it's because the SAIP is now incapacitated and the unburned fuel it was meant to help burn in the cats is now being exhausted. This only happens right after start up and until warm.

I know, you're thinking "No sh*t dummy, this is exactly what the mod is meant to do", but I didn't expect to get sensory evidence of it working. Also cool that I can prove effective install with my nose as well as a voltmeter.

If I remember correctly, there is a GM pump that is exactly the same pump that used on the new were Tundra And sequoia. Surelythere exists a GM cheap replacement pump that's compatible with the older 4runner V-8 as well. The GM pump compatible with the Sequoia and tundra is only around $100 instead of the 350 and or $400 for the Toyota version

They do make aftermarket pumps. That's not the issue.
The issue is the $100 pump is buried under the entire intake manifold so you must disassemble the top 1/3 of the motor to get to it.
ALSO......then there is the VSV and the actual valves that get clogged(stuck open or closed). Its a lose/lose, no win situation trying to keep the system running. Some of the newer vehicles they put the pumps in more accessible locations(newer Tundras/Sequioas)

So this mod is only preventive or it can be used after you started hearing the whine?

It can be done anytime. Preventative, post-whine, post-failure, anytime.

The only difference is how many steps you need to take in the installation. If the truck has already thrown a CEL because of it, you will probably need to spend an extra 15 minutes installing the blocking plates. If no codes yet, simply wiring in the bypass is all that is necessary.

The idea is to do it preemptively. If not, you risk limp mode, stuck open valves(requires blockoff plates which are PITA to install), possible shorting pump over time and getting the P0180 code........and overall headache of wife calling you saying CEL light is on:) Its cheap insurance if you plan on keeping your truck.

Thank you guys. Luckily I have not thrown any codes. If I buy this would it make the noise go away? Is install pretty straight forward and where do I buy this bad boy?

Email slyfox, PayPal him the funds, and he'll send a kit to you promptly. Instructions are very detailed and if you run into a bump he will be happy to walk you through it.

And if you're talking about the vacuum noise on startup, yes this will make it go away.

How severe is the secondary air valve problem?

Hey folks, totally new to the forum and currently trying to purchase my first 4Runner. I just had a Toyota dealership mechanic look at the 2005 4wd 4.7v8 and they told me the air valve issue is causing the CEL and other dash lights to come on and off. Quoted me roughly 3500 for the fix. I'm asking here because I'm not yet savvy with working on vehicles and have only leased vehicles previously. My question is how pressing of an issue is this? I've read horror stories of people with this problem and don't want to spend 9k on the vehicle if I'm only going to have to shell out another 3.5k to fix this problem right off. I've read about bypass mechanisms people use and my understanding is that this valve is really just an emissions requirement and not essential to the function of the engine, but I could be totally wrong. Please help me to understand the issue better and if I should keep looking for another vehicle. Thanks!

TLDR:
Looking at 2005 4wd v8 4Runner, mechanic says secondary air valve needs to be replaced yet vehicle runs extremely well. Is there a cheap way to fix this(cheaper than the $3500 quote) or is it a deal breaker? Thanks!

It's a 2005 4Runner 4wd 4.7V8 Limited with 183k miles

If its not stuck closed, use this issue as a bargaining chip and buy this kit for 45 dollars. Problem solved. take the 3500 in savings and upgrade your suspension

Yeah......id use it as bargaining chip either way. Play dumb like its a HUGE issue, get the discount, then get the truck and a bypass. I would get the exact codes though just to ensure there is nothing else going on.
email me at jeffcolemaps@ gmail and I'll help you through it if you'd like.

i just bought a 2006 Limited v8 w/ 102k last week and i made sure this was the first mod i do on the truck....

bought my kit from slyfox75...

electrical wiring is like reading chinese to me, since i work at a new car dealer, i had one of my techs read it and then he explained it to me.

i did it myself and he just double checked and watched over me as i did the install.

IF I CAN DO IT, anyone of y'all can install it too... tech checked everything with multi-meter and it all checked out perfect!

instructions and pictures were VERY VERY HELPFUL!!!

thanks again slyfox75, now no more worries!!

slyfox75 really saved my ass on this one. It's a serious deal
