Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure on V8's! Important!

Oh thank jeebus, I about had a heart attack. Dear California: I really hate removing SAS crap so if you could **** off already that'd be great. At least my single cylinder motorcycle was an easy job. Dad's truck was a pain because the faulty valve murdered his sending unit.

Go ahead and secede please, I know existing causes cancer STAY OUT OF MY LIFE CALIFORNIA!
It took me reading about 20 pages of comments to find this, but man oh man, as someone who just bought an 03 V8, this is the best news I've heard this week.

My god awful shop vac sound problems just started this summer on my 06 v8. I threw a code P1441 and P1444 and promptly cleared them. Am I reading something wrong that people only get this when it is colder? Why has mine started acting up in the hotter months? Did I have a pump failure and a temperature sensor failure at the same time? Upon starting if I rev past 2000-2500 rpm and hold that throttle position the pump whine stops. It will start back up if I don't hold that rev long enough. When I put it in drive while the pump is making that god awful sound then I get lower power output from the engine. I'm guessing my valves are working fine since i get full power when the air pump stops.
I have thrown those 2 codes mentioned above exactly 3 times sine July when this started happening. Just about everyday I start up and throw no codes at all even when the air pump is screaming.

The air pump your hearing is there to pump fresh air into the cat and make it burn hotter quicker. so theoretically it happens in the cooler months because its cooler out. But it can happen anytime. Order the kit before you create more work for yourself. I haven't had an issue since I made this post and installed the kit a few years ago.

I would bet that some of the plastic vanes on the pump have come apart and spinning around in the pump assembly. They will eventually move downstream to one of the 2 valves. If that tiny piece gets lodge in the valve then you will be getting another code.

I'm waiting for his reply to purchase the slyfox kit.

I had to search this thread to find his email. Here it is for anybody else.

.and all done with the installed. I took my time so more than the estimated 45 minute installation time. A bit surprised there wasn't any plates, but no worries. Literally easy cheesy. Just take your time. I disconnected my (-) battery before I started the install...not sure if that really mattered and used larger zip-ties.

Thank you Jeff Cole!

My Bypass is not plug and play. It requires you to cut 1 wire. No special skills/tools needed to install though. Install takes 15mins or so for a first timer.
They both trick the ECU into not activating the system.
I do not do plates(typically not needed unless always in limp mode).
Hewitt includes plates I believe.
My bypasses are $48. His are more expensive.

Thanks, Jeff!

Amazing experience with slyfox75...I highly recommend.

After throwing P1442 and P1445 codes, I found this thread, and I'm glad I did. My codes showed "valve stuck closed", so I did not need to worry about block plates. I would recommend you install this prior to any failures, so it just never happens, and you can avoid a "stuck open" scenario.

I inquired on a Friday night, and by Saturday morning, I had a response from Jeff, and his bypass was in the mail with a tracking number provided.

I finally found the time to install, and it was as easy as can be. He provides all the info you need, including pictures.

It took about 30 min, because I'm careful...if I did it again, it would take 5 minutes. I spent maybe another 30 min after just making it all look clean in the engine compartment. That would take me the same amount of time if I did it again.

I did this a couple of weeks ago, cleared my codes, and nothing since. Much quieter at start-up, as the unnecessary pump no longer comes on.

Grateful that guys like slyfox75 are supporting us...thank you!

2007 4runner throwing p2440 code fixed by slyfox75!

Just a shout out to Jeff aka slyfox75.

His solution fixed my issue exactly as described.

Great delivery and instructions, took about 15 minutes and boom! I'm back in business for $50 instead of $2500.

I am not very mechanical and still got this done solo in 15 minutes. Just follow the directions.

Kudos Jeff...you rock!!!

P0418 & P2445 Codes but no Noise

Per my mechanic, my codes are as follows for my 2005 V8 4Runner:

P0418 - Secondary Air Injection Relay "A" Malfunction
P2445 - Secondary Air Injection System Pump Stuck Off

So far no unusual noise is detectable. Will the bypass options work for me? Also wondering if we can fix the Relay Malfunction would that solve the pump stuck off code?

Thanks in advance!

You need a bypass
The bypass will most definitely fix your 2445. The P0418 it "technically" will not. I say that as the 0418 means your pump is shorted or completely unplugged(no circuit OR short circuit exists).

I had a intermittent P0418 when I put my kit in years ago. It "fixed" it as the pump is in a state where the ECU is OK with it(resistance is seen within certain window) and since there is a bypass now, it never tries to turn it on.

If you still have P0418 after bypass, you will need to get a Pump Replacement Pack from Hewitt Tech.
Hope that helps.

Does the bypass requite removing the intake?

My mechanic thought the bypass might require removing the intake - is this the case or not? Thanks in advance!

The ENTIRE purpose of the bypass is to NOT have to take all the intake manifold and associated hardware off. Mechanic has his thought process flipped:)

Just finished reading all 23 pages of this thread, that took a while.

Yesterday the wife called and said the CEL and VSC lights came on at startup. I told her to just take the Subaru instead and I'll read the codes when I get home.

Code came up as a P1445, I went ahead and cleared it, started it up, heard the shop vac noise (at least I think) but it was pretty faint from inside the truck, and then it stopped after about 5 seconds. I drove it about 2 miles with no more CEL and no problems.

I have emailed Jeff wanting to buy a kit, does the P1445 mean that my valves are closed?

Yes the valves are stuck closed on bank 2.

Picked up a 2008 with 115K a few weeks ago, ordered the $48.00 proactive maintenance device today.

Emailed him this morning, he responded shortly, paid via PP and I’ve already got the tracking number.

Thanks Jeff

EVERYONE, Trust SlyFox and order his kit, preventative or not, it's worth it.

Solved my issue, simple to install, and Jeff was extremely helpful!

Got the kit installed 2 days ago, so far so good.

I did end up getting a P1442 code before I got the kit installed. Anyone know what that one means?

I think I'm going to get a small grommet and drill a hole in the fuse box cover for the wire to exit the fuse box, also will probably get a wire protector for the wire run, I'm anal about stuff like that.
