Security LED - voltage rating

Hi,


What is the voltage rating of the security LED on the center panel switch assy?


I wanted to connect the LED wires from an aftermarket alarm to the security LED on the center panel but i'm concerned that the voltage and ampere rating are not compatible. has anyone done this before?

Typically, a red LED has an average voltage of 2.0v.

I can guarantee that the stock LED is NOT seeing battery voltage (12v-14.1v). There is a resister inline to lower that to the safe 2.0 volts. 12v would blow that LED quickly. No flash, no nothing; it'd instantly fry.

If you're wanting to connect the aftermarket LED to the stock LED, it may be fine. What color is the aftermarket LED? If red, you should be fine, as the voltage will be the same, give or take 1/10th v.
If another color, the voltage may vary slightly, up to around 4v.
4v shouldn't automatically blow the stock LED, but it will get noticeably dimmer quite quickly, until it just stops working.

To be safe, use a multimeter. Also, LEDs are polarized, meaning that you have to have the negative and positive connected properly for it to work. It won't hurt anything if it's wrong, it just won't work.
 
Thanks! the aftermarket LED is blue and it's noticeably bigger than the stock red led. can i still measure the voltage of a blinking led? i would like to measure the voltage of the aftermarket led as well.


also, i wanted to connect the aftermarket led wires to the stock wires of the C24 connector (orange) at the back of the center panel switch assy. but it seems that may not be possible unless the aftermarket blue LED is currently seeing 12v which may not be the case since it's attached to the pcb of the aftermarket alarm

I'm not sure I'm fully understanding you. Is the aftermarket LED dangling on wires by itself waiting to be installed somewhere, or is it soldered to the PCB of the aftermarket unit?
Do you want to replace the stock Red LED with the Blue, or just power the stock Red from the aftermarket unit?

If you simply want to power the Red from the aftermarket unit, depending on how it's set up, you have 2 options. If the Blue is on its own wire, you're going to need to trace the wires from the PCB on the stock unit to see which ones power the stock LED. Then, cut them from stock power (tape up the stock wires on the main harness; that's live voltage) and splice the wires from the stock plug into the wire for the blue LED (cut the Blue out of the equation).
If the Blue is on the aftermarket PCB, you'll need to solder a length of wire to the aftermarket PCB, and then splice into the stock plug.

If you remove the blue, you'll need an inline resistor. Blue typically takes about 3.4v versus 2.0v for Red, so you'll want to lower it to a Red safe voltage range. An online LED Resister calculator says that you'll need a 47ohms, 1/8w resistor for that. Just solder it inline either immediately before or after the LED, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter the direction it faces, either.

If you leave the blue, it will work, but they will both be pretty dim, as neither LED will get their full voltage.


I won't bet my life on it, but I can guarandamntee you that neither LED is receiving 12v, so don't worry about that.


From my limited experience, physical size doesn't *necessarily* mean a change in voltage. Even those smaller SMD LEDs seem to follow the same basic voltage patterns. It's just the housing that refracts/magnifies the light that changes. Of course, I can't promise anything, but that's what I've typically found. Case in point, the green LEDs for the Auto-Windows are actually SMDs. I removed those and soldered in some white 3mm LEDs and they work great. White LEDs can take a higher voltage than green, so I wan't TOO worried about blowing anything.

You should be able to measure the flashing LED the same. The flash isn't in the LED, but somewhere in the circuit before it. It's just a break/reconnection of the voltage. So when you measure, you'll just get a break/reconnection also.

You can measure from the PCB itself if you're careful. Make sure all connections are plugged in, and hold the MM prongs to the metal 'tape' on back of the PCB near your LED. That's what carries the current to/from the LED.

Alarm LEDs will be "12V" LEDs (built-in resistors, designed to be driven with a nominal 12V.

Based on my reading of the factory diagrams, the OEM security LED in the center stack is driven with 12V and the current-limiting is happening on the PCB it is attached to.

All you need to do is hook up the alarm wires to the stock security light wires.

Blue is positive, white-black is negative (ground). You'll have to figure out how the alarm is wired.

Make sure you disconnect the stock wires from the alarm output.

Sorry for not being clear. The blue aftermarket LED is attached to two wires that are plugged into the PCB of the aftermarket alarm.


What I preferably would like to do is to cut the blue LED from the wires and connect the aftermarket wires to the stock blue and white-black wires that are attached to the C24 orange connector behind the center panel switch assembly. That way, I'm hoping to power the stock security red LED from the aftermarket unit without much modification.


My question now would be: Is that still possible considering the resistor and the diode in the stock PCB and also the possible low voltage from the aftermarket PCB? I presume that the wires in the C24 connector are taking 12V from the body ECU.

I sure hope that it is as what you mentioned. Will know tomorrow when I open the center panel.


I have already figured out the aftermarket wiring but not the voltage.

Alarm LEDs will be "12V" LEDs (built-in resistors, designed to be driven with a nominal 12V.

Based on my reading of the factory diagrams, the OEM security LED in the center stack is driven with 12V and the current-limiting is happening on the PCB it is attached to.

success! the voltage in the wires of the aftermarket LED was 11+v so I was able to wire it up directly to the Blue and the White-Black wires of the C24 connector after disconnecting the Blue wire from the stock alarm. The stock red security LED is now wired to the aftermarket alarm. Hope it lasts.



Only thing is it's not as bright as the aftermarket blue LED
