Seized Caliper Symptoms?

New member
My new to me Sport has 65K on it and I'm suspecting the seized caliper issue. Occasionally the truck feels like it has a hesitation or a down shift at the wrong time. Engine is running perfect and it's not actually down shifting. I've skimmed through the seized caliper threads but didn't come across any symptom descriptions.

Sounds more like one of the many nanny features. The truck will downshift quickly to use engine braking if it senses you going "too fast" down "too steep" of a hill.

It took me a bit to figure it out.....
 
Yea, both of my front calipers were seized and all I noticed was my braking sucked! My pads were worn to the metal. Didn't replace with Toyota calipers because I've talked to a few people who are on their 4th set of Toyota calipers. No thank you!

Worst case scenario, jack up a front tire and use some large pliers to squeeze the pad back. If the pad moves, you're good. If the pad doesn't, go to get some new parts haha.
 
I am wondering if I have the seized caliper issue. When I am braking it not a real smooth slow down. It's like it jerking motion when braking. The only thing is my pads look fine plenty of life on them.
 
If it happens when coming to a stop, it may be the old Thump and Bump issue. Do a search here and resolution is really just a good drive shaft lube job.

Probably warped rotors, which will worsen unless you have the rotors machined or replaced. Does your steering wheel vibrate at all? How fast is the frequency of the motion you describe? Is it speed dependent?

Yes when braking the steering wheel does vibrate also, the jerking motion does it work at lowering braking speeds.

Warped rotors. They need to either be machined or replaced - most likely replaced. It will continue to worsen until you fix it, so I highly recommend addressing it.
 
Nah. Replacing the rotors on these trucks is, thankfully, very easy. I replaced my pads 2 months ago and went with ceramic on the front... as I had been warned, sure enough they started to affect my rotors.

I just replaced mine and it was very easy.

I know they're easy, that's not my problem haha. It's $$$$$$$$$$. Damn
 
If you can afford a tank of gas, you can afford rotors. The rock auto site has quality rotors for about 40-60 bucks.

Also, if your rotors have never been turned, then do that.... many places will do that for about 10 buck.

what calipers did you wined up going with, just autopart store edition or did you find some after market calipers that have better design

Here are the originals, with the quite obvious seized piston:

I went with Autozone's DuraLast brake calipers. They're "the same, if not better" than the OEM calipers. They pretty much look the same, but have a nice coating on them!

I also used Wagner ThermoQuiet ceramic brake pads up front. The rears are still rather new, so I didn't bother with em. The Wagners have SO much bite, but they throw a considerable amount of brake dust.

The silver finish on the front calipers has succumbed to rust, so I went to Autozone and picked up a caliper paint kit. I'm painting them red once the weather gets better.
 
Are the autozone caliper remans or new? Chances are they are the same as the OEM and from the same supplier.

Judging the white stamp they appear to be reman.

Toyota needs to either replace the piston with SS or Ceramic to combat the corrosion problem. They could also coat them but depending on the temps the pistons see it may just buy more time before the failure.

These are new. The stamp is just part info from duralast.
