sell my 3rd gen t4r and buying a 01 LC (100 series)

as the title says, what do you guys think about selling my 3rd gen and buying a 2001 100 series Land Cruiser?

It's because I have a new trd supercharger sitting in the garage and I kinda don't want to mess with it anymore. Plus I was thinking about buying armor. In total, such money would equal to an earlier 100 series LC: a bigger suv w/ more powerful v8.


I haven't decided on anything yet, but just been thinking about it.

My 99 t4r 4x4 limited spec:
220k miles

new tb/water pump
transmission cololer
new lbjs/obj/ibj

elocked swap w/ new brakes and new rear seals
all fluids flush
deck plate mod
elbow mod
tundra front brake upgrade
extended ss brake lines
interior led upgrades
headlight (TRS HID retorfit)
tundra/bilstein 5100 and LC 5100 rear
pander drop

SCS F5 w/ 285/75/16 durtracs
.75 bora spacers
1/2 inch body lift

borla mufflers
new o2 sensor
all new fluids

plus a lot of little touch ups here and there thanks to this forum.

I love 3rd gens myself but ive been toying with the idea of getting a commuter and an lc80 as a dedicated wheeler myself. Some things to consider are things like if you use your 3rd gen as a DD or just a weekend warrior??

Lc100s are great for wheeling. Great articulation and flex plus they look badass lifted, armored, with snorkel and such. A sc'd 3rd gen is super fun to drive though haha.

I do that too haha. Ive been googling lifted lc80s hah. Well throw the sc on and call it a day.

I think the MPG is less and the parts/repairs are more.

But they are nice trucks.

Everyone agrees that 100 series trucks are amazing. A bigger 4runner essentially, IFS, super comfortable, worse mileage, more $ for parts. If its meets your goals, go for it! They are too big to fit in the woods up here in the PNW...

OP I just went through what you are thinking about doing. My 4runner is at the tipping point of being "fully built" but I keep thinking in the back of my mind that a 100 series would serve me better in the long run. I have full armor, supercharger, radflo coilovers etc. Only thing left is to re-gear.

I've driven the 1998-2002 cruisers before. While I loved the quality it wasn't enough to get me to start over. Recently I made the mistake of driving a 2003 cruiser. That 5 speed (2003-2007?) is a game changer for that vehicle and may make me list the runner sooner rather than later. Only problem is the 2003+ lx and cruiser seem to be a good 4-5k more expensive than the 98-02's. I know that wasn't much help but if I were you I'd throw that supercharger on before doing anything drastic. It's fairly easy to install and makes a huge difference in the drivability of a 4runner with large tires.

I almost got a 100 series instead of my 3rd gen. There were a couple factors that made me wind up with a 3rd gen instead. I would have spent twice as much on the 100 series, which is money I put back into the 4Runner instead. My cousin has a 100 series, and everything on the damn thing is much more expensive to mess with. It's also BIG, which is nice, but on the trails around here, size matters, and on this one, smaller is better. I've almost had my 3rd gen a year and have zero regrets.

I agree, it will take substantial work (lift, 35s, armor, etc) before it looks good.

For argument sake, this is the 200 series and there is similar one on 35s and you can't deny how 'bad ass' it looks.

If I could afford a 100 series, I'd own a 100 series.

I can understand wanting a 100-series if you need more space. Other than that, what you get is a bigger, heavier, thirstier vehicle with an old school suspension (still torsion bar), a V8 that makes less power than a SC'd 3.4 (along with 1,000 lbs more weight to push around) and it is much more difficult to find a LC with a locking rear diff than a 3rd gen. But then again, the 100-series has that awesome split tail gate.

maybe i should post on the 5th gen section: brand new 5th ten t4r or used 2013 LC 200 series.... They cost about the same.


Funny you mention torsion bars, I has no idea how that works and was studying it last night.

If only we got the twin turbo diesels here....

Agreed. The LC stopped being a badass when the 80 was retired. The 100 and 200 are too posh. Too rounded.

Agree. 80 or before looked the best. I think currently my favorite is the 60.

But some of those posh features are nice.
