Worst online purchase ever. Purchased 4 trail wheels, $600 shipped. He whined about shipping costs, not my problem really, he advertised them as shipping inclusive. To save on shipping, two boxes were taped together so there were only two packages. No biggie, I can understand that.
Got home to find 3 boxes on my doorstep, one was open and the wheel damaged. UPS has no idea about the missing wheel. (See pics below)
Seller says the ups store taped the boxes, ups store says seller did. Seller has pretty much had a "not my problem" attitude about it. Seller also did not insure the packages so UPS is stating regardless of value, the most they would pay (assuming they did) is $100 per item.
Talk about frustrated, it has been almost a month and I am still stuck with 2 wheels, a damaged wheel, and at some UPS depot there is a wheel sitting unclaimed. Still going back and forth with UPS who denies any responsibility and is making me deal with the UPS store (store #5000). Seller, ups store, and ups have all gone radio silent at this point.

damn did you pay through paypal? i would go through them to stop the payment first and then go one step back to my credit card company i use through paypal if that didn't work. Idk but it sounds like he cheaped out on insurance and should be his problem for poor package, if he even shipped you all 4 wheels

I did go through paypal but I used the gift option, direct draw from checking. Otherwise I would have fought it via that route. UPS got back in touch and the claim is pending. Pretty sure he did ship all 4, going by listed weight of the packages. He used cheap ass tape for somewhat heavy items.
After they pay out or deny, I'll go to my next option which will probably be small claims court.

just a heads up on my last shipment to a customer, my UPS helper instructed me to make the boxes smaller since they go by size now, not so much by weight. He also doubled the tape on my boxes. Sounds like it may have been a store thing. although not insuring is pretty absurd.

It was he said, she said between the store and seller. I have shipped quite a few things in my time and I always package it myself and to date have never had a problem. The onus is on the seller, imho, to ensure everything is kosher. Also the seller's responsibility to insure the damn thing. That actually annoyed me more than anything. What a cheap-ass.

Figured I would give an update. Luckily the UPS store came through, despite the fact, imho, that the seller the moron. They emailed me to let me know ups issued a check and it is being sent to me. Hopefully they are reimbursing for the amount I gave ($ per wheel when purchased as singles) and not the $200 limit since brain trust didn't insure for squat. So while not as good an outcome, at least I got something.

Again, I cannot state how unhelpful and carefree the seller was about this whole thing. No follow up, nothing.

On the plus side, at least you got something. USPS is by and far the ABSOLUTE WORST when it comes to claims. They've denied every single claim ive ever made. FedEx has been wonderful, but I learned my lesson when it came to shipping anything worth over $100. Get the extra insurance. All shipping companies are complete shit when it comes to package care. I've lost a few hundred dollars to damaged products, no matter how well I wrap them. And they always use the same excuse "It wasn't packaged properly". Its their get out of jail free card for literally EVERY situation.

Taping the boxes together was stupid BTW, they don't ship based on number of boxes or even weight in that case. Its all dimensionally. And he paid a couple hundred to send those wheels. Seller learned a hard lesson and is butthurt he lost money.

Lesson to all buyers/sellers: SHIPPING IS NOT EFFING FREE, I don't care what Amazon ships for! To John Q. Public, shipping is expensive AS HELL. Stop assuming its "just a few bucks!" (btw, rant not aimed at you OP, just anyone who thinks shipping is cheap)

/Rant off :)

Very right, I am happy I got something instead of being told to pound sand. However, it took a lot of emails and almost getting a lawyer involved. They ended up giving me $248. Enough to get 1.5 wheels!
Will chalk it up to the seller being a worthless pos and ups being ups. Just amazed that I have never had a problem with shipping and I have shipped to Hawaii and Canada among other places. I pack with the assumption they will toss my package from the plane mid-flight.

After all this I decided to just give the wheels to my nephew, getting his trail wheels and going to get them powdercoated in a shade of gunmetal.

I worked at a UPS store when I was in college. UPS stores keep all paperwork in regards to the shipment and the shipper would have signed off on the $100 standard declared value that UPS covers for all packages. I don't see how the store would have been at fault for a bad seller.

He claims they packaged it and verbally assured him it would be fine in transit. If not for that then I would not hold them accountable at all. I ran the entire situation by UPS and they told me the store was who I had to deal with as they were the shipper.

Right at that point they act as an agent on behalf of that seller. The bad thing is when the seller doesn't insure, it puts the store in a tough spot. We often paid to keep people happy, even if it wasn't our fault.

Sorry to hear about to wheels OP, hope you can find a steal!

Even in his cheapness, he couldn't spend a few extra bucks to insure. It just boggles my mind the logic of people like this. He had my money already so I think he didn't give a shit anymore.
I just hope anyone considering buying from him saw this thread and had a change of heart.
He should be IP banned until he made good on the transaction but this board doesn't give a crap. Some other boards I used to frequent would do this. Wasn't foolproof but it worked more times than not. This board could at least ban them from selling again however.

To me, it sounds like he took the individual wheels to the UPS store looking to ship them and they said, "if you ship them as pairs, it'll be cheaper". So, the person at the store likely taped them up in pairs and one of them didn't make it through transit. It doesn't seem like it's a sellers fault at all. If anything could have done better, I would have taped the boxes at the store myself.

FWIW, I've shipped a set of wheels like this. However, I knew ahead of time that I was shipping them as pairs. I taped the boxes together much like this but I taped the crap out of them so they wouldn't separate. I also wrote the address everything was going to on every single box, clearly.

The seller could have done a couple things to prevent all this from happening, but in the end, it sounds like it's UPS who really screwed the pooch.

If he had used or ensured UPS used decent tape then there would not have been any issues. One roll of Gorilla Tape is like $8 and two passes around the boxes would have kept them together, much better than the cheap-o clear tape that was used.

It's still amazing to me how little the seller cared and his total lack of assistance. What a douche.

If anyone wants to troll trace him and send me his address, my uncle terry loves banging douches in the B-holes. Hes been chugging my mountain dew all night and looking for some action.
