Semi-light Towing?

Hello,
I'm considering purchasing a 05' 4Runner v6 to pull a 3,500 lb Travel Trailer, which weighs 2,600 lbs unloaded (if that matters). Most of the towing will be in the Midwest (flat) but we could take some trips through the west from time to time driving through the mountains. Could the 4Runner handle this?

It would be just fine with this weight. I had a travel trailer a few years ago that was the same weight and towed it with my last 4R, an 07 FJ, and a 97 Land Cruiser. The trailer *should* have an electric brake set up, so make sure you have a brake controller installed in the 4R and you will be good to go!

I know the V6 is rated up to 5000lb but IMO if you're going to pull a trailer that heavy you may want to consider a V8.

We recently got a new travel trailer and when we were shopping I told my wife that my limit was 2500lbs - I would not pull anything heavier without getting a more suitable tow vehicle.

We ended up with a T@B that weighs around 1700 loaded. But if we ever move up (wife eventually wants an airstream, I think) I'll bite the bullet and get something with a long wheelbase and a V8.

You should be just fine. I tow my utility trailer loaded to 3500+ lbs up in the mountains when I get fire wood. I have taken it down Rabbit ears pass (7% grade) loaded and it doesn't have trailer brakes with no problems in braking. On long descents I just gear down and let the engine do most of the braking. As far as power goes just take it out of OD if your are going up any hills. Otherwise it has plenty of power to pull it.
