Sending unit access

Need to clean sending unit to see if the gauge will read correctly before I replace it. Is there an easy way to reach it or do I need to drop the tank. Thanks

Drop the tank.

you can access the fuel pump through the access hole but not the sending unit. Odds are, the sending unit is bad. It's common for these older vehicles.

You have to drop the tank, and be careful not to strip out the heads on the sending unit mounting screws.

Also be careful disconnecting the fuel lines, the metal tubes they connect to tend to rust at the base, and you don't want to damage them.

So drop the tank to get to the connections to clean them to see if its going to work? It was reading half full then I filled it up and it hasn't moved since. Thanks
