Sentimental value and appreciating my '99.

Needing a wider back seat w/ 3 shoulder belts are building some pressure to part with my beloved 99 with GU package (locker, heavy duty stuff 5 speed).

I've been thinking of all that it has facilitated with 3 years as a guide rig, 7 as an all weather service vehicle, last few with the kids I never thought I'd have. I've never known a vehicle more reliable and trouble free.

I made a spread sheet with dimensions important to have in a new vehicle and it comes out as a rather impressive vehicle compared to many new vehicles.

There are thoughts of keeping it forever but I just don't want 3 vehicles (yet).

haha glad you guys said it, i didn't want to be a ****. i don't get what this is, bragging? question? or just blathering?
please tell us your delima or are you just saying that you need a new truck and nothing will ever fill the shoes of your runner?

I made a sheet to compare back seat width which is my biggest need for change and other things important such as turning circle and ground clearance.

I am waiting for more information on the next generation 4Runner and considering an Outback wagon. I'm not sure the Outback will handle all of my needs.

Dont buy an outback, a third gen 4runner is good ground clearance and gas miliage (for an SUV) and idk the turning radius. and i hear you can put a JEEP YJ back seat for your 3rd row seating if need be.

def not if ground clearance is a concern why not get an older land cruiser with the 3rd row? i mean what are you trying to accomplish? sounds like you need a extra set for the kids or something.... how big are your kids? can you not fit 3 of them in the back seat? please elaborate your thought process. other wise we're just :fishing: here for what you want, again is this post a question or a statement, if your looking at the next gen of 4runner you got like what 30-40K to spend? i'm sure there are plenty of options available for you in that price range, just not sure why your considering an out back unless you wear teva's with socks or something......:lmao::gun4:

There was a 3rd row seat someone had custommade for a 3rd gen over on yotatech for sale not to long ago..that could be an option..if not that then id get a 80 series cruiser for sure.
 
do what im going to do one of these days...buy a used sequoia and KEEP your runner...IT WILL NEVER FAIL YOU IF YOU TREAT IT RIGHT

I hope I can answer all the posts here.

The kids require the 3 shoulder belts in back seat 3rd generation does not have. Nothing less will do for my wife because we were hit head on before we had kids and were clearly saved by a safe car.

On the Tevas and Outback: My '99 4R replaced pickup as a river guide rig. Tevas no, Chaco's yes, and no socks (remember, was river guide). I realize we don't fit the Outback stereotype.

I don't want 3 vehicles again, but I have to admit that it's tempting to get a sedan or 2nd minivan and keep my 5 speed w/locker forever. Keep working out who has the minivan for kid duties....

On the Outback: The new model has a much bigger back seat and still not as big as most SUVs have grown and it should work for most river landings.

On new vs. used: Wife wants something with factory warranty, and my wife's 10+ on any 1 - 10 score I can think of. 20 years with a hot, smart and hard working woman is not to be taken lightly.

Bottom line: My 5 speed w/locker and AT tires is in a different league than what is on the new car lots these days and I don't want to be too quick to part with it. IMO 3rd. generation 4Runners are legendary and special in a way most of you should know.

I just found the answer to your problem, keep the runner, dump the minivan and get an 03-04 Land Rover Discovery 2. I will get a lot of arguments on this but it suits you well. It is a 7 seater all seat belts are shoulder. Plenty of space in the middle row which is stadium seating and plenty of room in the boot. If she wants the warrenty buy the LR Disco 3 or the New LR Disco 4. You get the best of both worlds: offroad ability, and safety and 7 passengers. WIN WIN SITUATION. SUCK IT SUBARU'S

Hi,

Thanks. That would solve off road capability, but I know people who had those and they were not reliable or frugal like my 4Runner. I looked at car lots briefly today and it made keeping the '99 look pretty good. My wife pronounced our '99 a classic so it may stay.

I think she's right about being a classic or at least archetype of reliable and capable SUV.

for reccomendation purposes only, (no fights please, Thai) i have an 04 disco and have had nothing wrong and am the 1st owner at 70k miles. and i love it. the only drawback is gas mileage.
