anyone have anything good to say about a 2001 or 2002 Sequioa? I need to get a bigger vehicle, the 4Runner is to small for the family. I drove one yesterday and the front end shake was very obvious. Is this a problem with these vehicles? Are there any other problems I should know about? Should I look for a Surburban instead?

I think they're nice for the additional space, but I'm not impressed with them otherwise. I think a full-sized truck should be capable of towing more than 6000 lbs (the 4runner is rated 1000 lbs higher), plus they're too expensive for what they are. If I was looking for more room for just transporting family (kids) I would be seriously considering the Honda Pilot. It's van-like (but still sporty) design allows for a much more roomy interior than the 4Runner, more cargo than the 4Runner, it's easier to get in and out of for kids, the third-row seating is the very best - most comfortable system bar none, and it will cost less at the fuel pump.

I haven't heard anything bad about Sequioas. They are based on the Tundra pick-up truck and are "Recommended" by Consumer Reports.

Don't know about the towing capacity of the Pilot but it has ample room. Both the 2nd and 3rd row fold completely flat to give you a large amount of cargo space. I guess it is a little deceptive looking but it's definetely a nice and roomy family vehicle.

It looks like your buying used. Don't get a Pilot, I am sure the re-sale value is high. Plus they are not a truck, they have no frame.4runnen said:

Ohhh... no. The Pilot is not for you then! I did not understand all of your needs. If you need to tow a trailer as well, you need a V8, of course. Sequoia is rated for about 6000 lbs... I dont know why so low, perhaps they don't offer a stock frame-mounted hitch receiver, in which case it would sure be a simple fix. Tahoes, and Suburbans are pulling champs, rated for 8500. Check out the third row seat in a Tahoe... it's ridiculously hard to get into, and uncomfortable even for kids!
You're right, Suburban IS looking better and better. Too bad about all those pesky reliability issues. Maybe a Toyota Landcruiser?

Land Cruiser is too expensive for me!!! Plus not as roomy as the Surburban or even the Sequoia for that matter...
Going to test drive a Surburban today and see how it fits in the garage. I can get a 2003 Surburban with alot less miles for the price of a 2001 Sequoia.

my bro has a black 03 seqouia limited with all the options... lots of nice features, seats 8, probably the best looking full size suv on the market, and you can't beat toyota quality.

how about the nissan armada? the Armada's got an available 9,100-lb towing capacity (from nissanmotors.com) if towing is what you need and looks to be about the same size as a suburban, maybe bigger.

the decision
Thanks for all the input, I think we have made a decision.
We are going with the Chevy Surburban or a GMC Yukon XL. They have tons of room, all the power I need to pull the trailer, smooth ride and the interior is nice too. And most of all the price is right! I can get a 2003 with less miles and at a lower price than that of an older Sequoia with more miles..
Going to miss the 4Runner, but hope to get a Toyota Crew Cab 4x4 truck in the not to distant future...

My wife drives a 2000 GMC Yukon (not XL). Works great for having kids in both rear rows (3rd row is comfortable, even for adults, just not for long trips - 4-5 hours in the third row is about the limit). 2nd row passenger side folds down to let in passegers, but you do have to climb a little bit to get over the seat (this isn't a minivan you know). Tows my 27' Regal (~7500 lbs) without any hesitation even with a full passenger load and has enough pickup to spare. I have the 5.3 liter (327 V8) and never have any complaints for power. Gas mileage on this car is about 18 highway (not towing, with AC), and about 12 highway (towing, loaded, with AC).
Reliability? 78k miles, only in the shop once for 60k service. No issues whatsoever with this vehicle, and this was the first year of the redesign.

My wife and I have owned: Yukon, Expedition, and now the Sequoia. There is NO comparison between them. The quality, fit, finish on the Chevy/GMC is unbelievably poor compared to our Sequoia. The Expedition isn't even in the same leage. A regular Yukon has a horrible 3rd row and NO space behind it. My wife is a Realtor and has had 7 people in the Sequoia with comfort many times (I'm 6'3" and sat in the 3rd row for about 2 hours, no problems, very comfortable).
We did drive the Yukon XL and liked the room inside but HATED the way it drives. Talk about driving your living room down the street. Visibility is poor, turning radious is terrible, it feels so big it's uncomfortable to drive, quality is poor (certainly not in the same league there), the design is very outdated (all the Chevy trucks are getting hammered in the magazines now because they're not up to the standard until their redesign), gas mileage is rediculous (real world my wife gets 16-17 w/ the A/C on, she got 13-14 with our "lighter weight" Yukon which has A/C that can't keep up in the Arizona summer).
